I get torn apart every time I suggest that money or capitalism could be a good thing.

The problem I have with things like Black Friday (and the commentary around them) is the recent idea that no one should be allowed to judge anyone else, not even based on their actions. Seems like if you want to curb mindless, 1980s style capitalism then judging these feral 'shoppers' is exactly what we ought to be doing.

How exactly is shopping a sign of some particular economic theory?

People shop in China, too. And I hear it's one of the worst countries for manners. People hock spit on the floor in public, and push each other out of the way in lines.

Do you think people shopping in Venezuela would be any more civil if they could buy things at half the normal price? What about Russia? Or Kenya? I think they would massacre each other just the same.

China and Russia have plenty of consumerism. Some Kenyan guards who responded to the mall shooting also found time to loot the shops.

I think we agree, you can't blame it on an abstract idea of 'money' or 'capitalism'. I was pointing out that the people who counter-criticise, and say these 'shoppers' are blameless, actually dehumanise them even more.

Oh for sure, I defend everyone's right to criticize everyone else. There should be no protected classes, no hate speech, or any other legislation against thought crimes. But with that said, we should also be able to criticize those who criticize others.

As far as mindless 1980s capitalism...I was too young to enjoy the party very much, but shit, it seems like the 80s were a great time (at least here). I wish we could revert to such mindlessness. The 2000s onward seem pretty shitty in comparison. Endless wars, huge housing crisis, moribund economies throughout the West...bring back Gordon Gekko, I say.

Yup. Living in Ontario, just like you.

And you're right, it usually is just the first few days that are bad. Near the end of boxing week , they'd likely be restocked in all their products and there's less people since they all got what they want already.

Last year when I bought a new TV during boxing week I was pretty surprised, I went a little late and I got a hold of a TV real quick, in-and-out within 10 minutes.

Alot of capitalism critics here, but let me ask you guys something.

The computer or phone you're reading this on, what role did government hold in its development?

How about the clothes you're wearing? Did the government issue them or did you stitch them yourself?

How about those government-controlled grocery stores and fast food places? Or do you hunt, fish, or grow your entire diet?

Look at countries that government controls or the private sector, the countries that allow there to be a private sector anyway, and tell me which ones are prosperous as compared to the capitalist countries... not just groups as a whole, but individuals being able to come from nothing to be as wealthy as they'd like.

You guys are coming off as hipster kids that act like people having more than them is the bane of their existence.
 
Comes down to personal choice. Want to deal with mobs and waiting in line for hours to get a 1/2 off TV? Go for it!

If you don't, that's cool too.

No one is forcing anyone to bail on Thanksgiving dinner
 
If I had a chance to get a lets say PS4 for 1/2 price, I would seriously injure people while making sure I get it.
 
I'm not willing to wait for hours and risk my personal safety for items that I don't need.
 
It's getting worse for Black Fridays, they had 34 arrests where I live from incidents of people getting stupid in stores.
 
I will gladly pay more to avoid lines, aggressive poor people and early mornings.

My time is worth money to me, as is my level of comfort and shopping experience.

Unless we are talking about savings in the 1000s of dollars, I am sitting at home on black Friday/boxing day.

For the guy that said he would injure people for a half price PS4, that is nuts. Your talking about $200 in savings.

If that type of money matters that much to you, maybe you shouldn't be buying the latest and greatest electronics
 
I went to the mall and midnight and there were no lines and not a crazy amount of people there. I think it's kinda good that deals are getting spread over the week now. Less chaos and still profits for the stores doing it. I was done shopping in under an hour.
