There was a story about Jeff Monson on last Real Fighter magazine about that. He got his named done in kanji and they did it wrong now he has John written in his arm.

I believe it bro, it happens all the time! I have friends who have tattoos in kanji that dont mean what they think they do. You really gotta be careful.

I always thought that a python was a great symbol for BJJ. Get a colored one for each of your belts entwining the Ju Jitsu triangle maybe?

A lot of Carlson guys have the bulldog from my gym

A lot of Barra guys (at least here in Chicago) have the Taz Devil on their inside arms.

What's with the "bjj tats in inside arm" thing?

Its just a good place to get one. Its not immediately obvious that you have one so you dont always have to answer questions about it. Ive always just liked the idea of getting one on the inside of my forearm.

What is translation? On a platter
A poet's pale and glaring head,
A parrot's screech, a monkey's chatter,
And profanation of the dead.

-Nabokov

What? Are you asking me to tanslate that? If so then youre outta luck man, I dont speak Japanese and I cant write in Kanji.

I'm not asking you to do anything.

You originally said that people get kanji tattoos that don't mean what they think they do.

I translate Japanese to English at work so I appreciate the difficulty in translating something directly from one language to another while keeping the same meaning and nuance.

Vladimir Nabokov, who was trilingual, wrote a poem about the meaning of translation to defend a translation he did of another author's work.

Rather than simply say, "Yeah translation is hard", I thought I would post a quote from said poem about the impossibility of translation.

My post had no special meaning other than to agree with yours. Perhaps the Sherdog grappling forum is not really the place for poetry...

So I guess: "I Heart Mom" is not the cool choice in a tattoo anymore?

Important Note: I really do love my mom.

Yeah I totally missed the boat on that one. Thanks for explaining it to the slower fellas like myself:icon_chee . What exactly do you do that requires Japanese to English translation?

Just an idea,
....a tattooed black belt..around your waist.

and for some...change the color to pink.

(not a serious idea btw)

Nice tats, and I would go with a generic BJJ or something just plain... no logos of schools as others have said you never know. Although I am as loyal as they come you just never know.

I'll get my name on my scapula and what I do on my pec.

ill get the gracie triangle logo at some point either on chest or arm but only wen i reach purple/brown wen u know u belong in bjj
