Except, did wrestling king of the mat at the end, divided group into over 170lbs and under. Teammates almost didn't believe that I was <170 and competing at 162. That combined with the comments on my strength makes me feel pretty confident about my strength/size to weight ratio.

guess who, sweet thang...love the username over here. I actually wanna be Donny Donowitz "the bear jew" for halloween this year.

curious about your cheesecake recipe? is it the same as the from the mega thread on BB.com? yours seems to have a different consistency.

Nice!! Glad you came on over. I've had that Halloween idea for yeaaars man, never got on getting all the pieces together. Actual German WWII dog tags are on Ebay, think they were a little pricey though. If you do it that would be epic.

Yeah the cheesecake recipe is the same from BB.com. I even made a thread over here in the Diet forum because the recipe is so amazing I knew it had to be shared. I did make one alteration, which is that I don't use any milk as the original calls for. Always ended up 'soupy' in the middle, maybe my oven just sucks.

How do you do yours, any alterations? Looks very professional. Mine can be hit or miss sometimes.

Philly Jiu-Jitsu Challenge
Result: First Place, Men's Blue Belt Lightweight

Match 1

I was annoyed to see it was a white belt fighting up in the blue belt division. This is tough because if you win, well it was just a white belt, and if you lose...
From standing I worked the ankle pick that I learned back in Texas. I set up two fake guard sits to see how he reacted and he was planting his lead foot heavy, so on the third take I picked it to his half guard. Tried to slide out to side control but it wasn't happening, so I decided to flatten him out and look for submissions from half guard. His neck was exposed so I worked an ezekiel, with a fist not a flat hand, and got the tap.

Match 2

I had seen this guy on Youtube when I was scouting the other grapplers in my division. He looked strong but as soon as we were grip fighting and he pulled me down, to half guard I felt 10x stronger, physically. His half guard was very active and I felt him working a shin sweep that turned into a sort of x-guard sweep, that he got me back to my butt. Without thinking I put my grips in for my baseball bat choke, something that I told myself I shouldn't do in competition anymore because I lost at NAGA for trying to force it. I think I felt so much stronger than this guy that I could afford the risk. Anyway, he wasn't taking the bait right away and kept trying to pass to my left. I defended really poorly by using leg flexibility instead of real jiu-jitsu, like shrimping and moving my hips. Will talk about that later though.

We end up back in open guard with the baseball bat grips in, and I finally am able to bait him with a fake scissor sweep to my right. He passes, I spin and pendulum my legs twice trying to pull him over me and he taps on the way over.

Match 3

Too much to go over in this match; went the 7 minutes, I won on points 14-0. He almost arm barred me at one point, I mean I was a milimeter away from getting my arm lost. Got a cool sweep and worked my standing pass with partial success; partial meaning I was able to stand and open without getting swept, but only got to his half guard. Need to review Trumpetdan's videos more and drill more in the gym.

So I was happy about this, because winning gold for the first time was what I was after big time.

No-Gi First Match
I talked to the guy a little before the match; he was about my size and looked strong, and he was from Flow BJJ under Ken Primola so I knew he might have some good wrestling. As soon as we started and collar tied, I knew he was stronger than me. He immediately pulled me into his guard and was off, working chokes. I really don't even know what happened, it was like a blur and in an instant I was getting choked and tapped. I mean, wow what a fucking monster! This guy was just super slick, very fast and strong and really good. It was almost humorous to me how fast I lost this. I'll upload the video and update here with it.

congrats on the successful competition. I'm looking to enter my first one in a few months. How quickly after you started BJJ did you start competing?

Thanks man. I did my first comp after 5 or 6 months of training. White belt is funny because the guy can have 2 months or 2 years of training, no small difference.

Nice work, Donowitz!

I like to think I am earning the name :icon_chee

Great job, you put on a sweep clinic on your last match.

Great job in the tournament, also really liked the analysis of matches, learnt quite a bit from them. Would be interested in seeing the No-gi match too when you can upload it.

Thanks guys. Once I get the vid off my dad's iPad it'll be up. Was not in a hurry to upload that one but I do want to review it again to find out what exactly happened there. The dude had won the last tournament in Philly and was super tight.

Strength training was key to success for me I believe. I was astonished at the differences in strength levels. Deadlifts and weighted pullups have paid off for sure.

-Dude I lost to in no-gi won the division, so bad luck of the draw.

Definitely a good thing to hear after a loss. There is never any shame in losing to a good competitor. Making mistakes or underperforming is one thing, losing to the guy who beat everyone else as well is something else entirely. And as you said, "luck of the draw" did have a lot to do it. Anything can happen in a tournament depending on the matchups.

The guy who got second to you (gi) goes to one of my gyms. I haven't seen him yet, but when I do I'll ask him about the match.

-Nutrition has really gone to hell since the tournament, and yet all the junk food is over with now and back on track to IF and IIFYM like a pro.

-Was up in the Poconos overnight and ran on a hilly road this morning, which was different.

Yeah I feel the same way. I would have not been happy if I did something sloppy or made stupid mistakes but the guy was just plain better than me. Vid should be up soon, you'll see I'm not even pissed when I lose.

Oh yeah? That's cool please do. I meant to ask him how long he has been training, he almost got me with that fucking triangle-arm bar. Solid dude.

BJJ (gi)

Trained at my old place over in Jersey. Good mix of experienced guys with brand new white belts. We did some drills to warm up and went over 4-5 clock choke variations, into Peruvians and other things. Really cool to learn things like that because it's like my old instructor's unique stamp on how he attacks the turtle. Got some rolling in from mount, guard, and knees. Crazy how even though I have made tons of progress in my training, so has everyone else at my old gym! It felt like we were all still neck and neck, myself and the other blue belts. The purple belts feel even tighter than before, and one from BJ Penn's school showed me how he is attacking the cross collar choke so damn effectively by using a certain type of leverage and the point of his elbow. Tough tough training, I forgot how grinding it can be and it was great to train at my first place again.

Notes

-Good workout; focusing more on hypertrophy in the workout after I do my Hepburn strength portion. Strength felt a little weak on the deadlifts for some reason.

-Nutrition has slowly come back into control. It's very tough when you're on the road often or the only thing to eat is Wawa or the pizza place on the corner. Some fat gain but nothing catastrophic. Haven't stepped on the scale since weigh-ins.

-Trained BJJ Saturday but didn't have a chance to log. Went to my old place, rolled with all the old guys again and had a hell of a time. I don't know if I was reverting back to old ways or something, but I just didn't feel too effective and like I was struggling with everything, every movement. On the other hand, these guys know my game better than anyone so maybe it hasn't changed enough over the past 8 months. I know that's not true though, since I won my first tournament the other week. Who knows.

-Ben & Jerry's Red Velvet Cake ice cream is pretty effin' good.

-Wrestled with a tough 3-year old yesterday. Almost logged it.
