BJJ, Strength & Air Traffic Control

Oh was wondering, how does your coach fair rolling with the head BB of your association?

We all live and die at his mercy. He does way better now than when we first got associated with him, but Coach = really good purple. Head Coach = Black Belt World Champ.

The difference is pretty large.

Yeah I knew you'd understand. Despite what WC said, I without a doubt am way in the lower ranks of the blues at this new school and zero-stripes is very appropriate, I feel like.

Oh and even if you were the strongest blue belt in the gym it's ok to be better than guys ranked higher than you. I always liked that actually.lol

On the topic of belt skill levels. I tend to place people in one of two categories for their belt based on their goals. Either comp or rec. There is a huge difference in the way a comp player approaches his/her game versus a recreational player. Then you can further break down those grouping based on the amount of training time at their rank.

This will give you a good idea of where you stand instead of comparing yourself to everyone in the gym at a given rank.

Can you take one wearing the hard hat?

Ok on second thought maybe that was a bad idea.

Makes sense Midmo but to me, what good is it being a 'recreational' purple belt who gets tapped by aggressive, serious white and blue belts? Maybe I'm looking at it all wrong. Training time I totally understand within a rank but rec vs comp I don't know, I mean can someone be rec black belt?

BJJ (no-gi)

Worked takedowns from a wresler's collar tie; snap-down to forward head lock, to an inside or outside leg trip takedown. This is the takedown that lost me points in my last NAGA, something I hadn't seen before and I'm super glad to have been introduced to variation of it because from what I can glean, it seems simple and high-percentage. We drilled it a good bit, then a snap-down all the way with your hips back until he's on his knees and spin to the back. Finally, jumping guard from the headlock and finishing with a guillotine. Everything we learn at this school is WAY different from what we learned at my old gym.

Rolled 6 rounds, from whites to a brown belt. One cool thing the amazing purple belt I roll with often taught me, is when he had my back he sunk in an RNC when I bridge to try and escape but his choking arm seemed to come from no where. I asked him after and he said from the back he had everything set up, for either a choke or arm bar and his choking hand was simply resting very comfortably around my collar bone/upper chest area. No pressure or tension at all he said, lest I grab at it to defend the obvious attack. Instead it just lies there until my neck opens up then BAM! it's across my throat. Awesome attack.

It's cool to hear about the difference in styles between different gyms/locations. What about submissions specifically? What were the most common subs in NJ, and what seem so far to be the most common subs at your new gym.

Basically any details as far as sweeps, positions, etc. I would love to read about. Thanks JewB.

Same, I'd love for you to elaborate on this.

Seems like a whole bunch of really good guys here, they're definitely going to push you and make you better.

And by the way, I had no idea this log was here. WTF.

Being a sport-BJJ focused gym, there are a lot of differences from my old gym.

Stand up: In the very short amount of time I've been here, the stand up work is very different from what I'm used to. At my old gym, the only stand up work we'd do is for real-life self-defense situations like bear hugs, head locks, being held against a wall etc. Here, we've done ankle picks, guard jumps and leg-takedowns.

Submissions: There haven't been too many differences here. We haven't learned many subs since I've been here because the theme of the month the instructors have said is escapes. Nothing too crazy, but I have seen a lot of high-percentage tournament subs being used here when rolling. Lots of ezekiel choke attempts for instance.

Positions/Movement: People here definitely roll for competition. They use the torreando pass a LOT, and exhibit a lot of standing open passes frequently. Or maybe it's because I pull open guard so much, idk. They're very methodical and go from side control to knee on belly a lot, I guess because of the points. From the top I've been subbed with developing arm bars mostly. At my old gym people 'hunted' less and were taught to conserve energy more. Consequently, I get mounted or whatever and often just lie there trying to stay safe. When I get top position on others, they buck and are very energetic trying to escape ASAP. Since a match is only 5-7 minutes it makes sense, just a departure from my old gym's style.

As I've said, the amount of talent here is huge by comparison. At my old gym we had 3 purple belts total. Here we have mostly blues, purples and at least one brown plus two black belt instructors. They are all encouraged to compete, and do often. It's just a more serious pace I'd say, a team-like atmosphere. Back in NJ the gym was more laid back and casual. There's also some bowing and lining-up here which is whatever to me. I just don't like gyms where you have to call people 'sir' and bow allll the time. This gym is not like that.

So yeah, quite a difference in training but I feel it'll only make me way better. Back in NJ I was a big fish in a small pond. Here I'm a small fish in a big pond. At least I can swim ;)

I just cut open my thumb while slicing chicken breast. It probably needed stitches but I bandaged it up pretty well with sports tape and the bleeding has stopped. BJJ tonight will be interesting.

Cheesecake is in the oven :) I'll make some of LeanBodyLifestyle's protein fluff later as a topping.

BJJ (no-gi)

Nobody showed up to teach fundamentals tonight so it was just a small group of open mat. Rolled with a blue and two whites. Felt good tonight, got a couple minutes video of rolling with the other blue.

:-(

Hey, uh TheJewBear (I keep wanting to call you S***z),question, how would you describe your game now? Favorite positions, submissions, guard, sweeps, etc.

Welcome back, man - looks like the jiu-jitsu is progressing nicely!

Video's workin' now Corrosion. Thanks for not spilling the beans ;) her lonely pathetic ex is still looking for me on the internet via my old gym's facebook and web site.

Anyway, back on topic. I'd say my game hasn't changed much lately! My 'feel' is more acute and better tuned for timing and things like that but I can't say it's changed much from the stuff I've always liked--open guard sweeps, leg submissions, triangles and lately key locks because I cleaned up my key lock technique via a video from Gerbil (a sherdogger) that I saw.

How about you? I'm psyched you started another log so I'll be keeping tabs on your progress and hopefully competitions.

Welcome back, man - looks like the jiu-jitsu is progressing nicely!

Thanks man I'm happy to be back with y'all training hard and part of the community. It's getting there, slowly but surely.

It works now...awesome leglocking! Especially that kneebar from the bottom, impressive. I definitely need to work on those...I've very rarely set any leglocks up from the bottom.

My game is a lot more fleshed out...I play a lot of butterfly guard now and mostly get chokes...guillotines, Darce chokes, Ezekiels and bow and arrow chokes...lot of triangles too. Passing is really solid I think, especially my half guard passes. My bottom half guard is still gutter shit though...

I want to start working spider guard...I remember you were working that a while ago...do you still use that a lot in the gi?

You schooled that guy. Did the thumb open up at all? I was hoping to see some blood

Gaaah. Everyone suuuucks. I find out you have a new log and a new username this way? U suk.

P.S. are you calculating your macros and calorie totals out by hand, bro? If so, I have a spreadsheet and nutrition database that I use in conjunction with my carb cycling spreadsheet that makes diet a friggin breeze.

I may not have explained myself as well as I would have.like about skill levels. Its about what a persons focus is that defines their intensity in the gym.

And yes it is possible to be a recreational black belt a lot of guys who teach would fall into this category. It doesn't mean they aren't serious only that Their goals aren't winning comps and they train accordingly.
