BJJ + bad knees

just ask your partners to go no heel hooks/ knee bars
dont shoot too much, or better yet just throw or trip
dont sit back with your knee up to break guard too much, that might strain it
no rubber guard
and lastly dont kick out with the butterfly hooks too much when they try to flatten your butterfly guard, i agitated my knee doing this

This is spot on.

I tore my ACL, LCL, PCL and 1/3rd of my hamstring in my left leg. I was just fine in ju jitsu. I actually could use my "fixed" knee better for gogo's than my "good" knee.

I tore my right ACL in a fight in early May and finally had surgery on it on 8/20. I'll be back in the gym.

You have to take things into account, but it's perfectly fine to train with. With that in mind, everyone is different. If you are perfectly mobile and you're just concerned about what if's, you'll never know until you try.

It's good that you have been strengthening your knees. Don't forget to add in a lot of straight leg-lifts to build up the muscles around your knees. That will help hold them in place and can assist where some of your other weaknesses may be in the joint.

I had surgery to repair my meniscus about 6 weeks ago. I've been back teaching for a few weeks now, but I am getting so antsy. I'm up to level 4 on the exercise bike, and go to see my doctor again on October 1st. I am hoping he clears me to do squats and some drills. For now, I've been stretching and showing positions...I'm a little swollen from being on my knees showing some stuff last night, but feels good to get it moving.

Feel it out...and like the other guys said, don't be afraid to let your coaches/training partners know about your injuries. Most of the guys in this sport will totally understand and work with you.

Whenever we get a new guy in one of the first things we ask before rolling is "anything off limits/hurt?". No need to be a dick and go after something that is tweaked!

That... and we have this lovely thing called tapping in this sport. :) It hurts, you tap.

Nice.

P.S. Spanking version? HAHA.

last time I went to the doc he filled out an unlimited prescription for anti-inflamatories:D

he said it is basically break it or make it and so far I have made it

try boxing if you want to enter combats sports

Every time I box when I get hit in the head (not even that hard) my vision, speech, and everything is just fucked up. Last time I had the worst head ache in my life and even threw up hours after from a small ass jab. The useless neurologist guesses that I have a low threshold...

It feels like it's the left side of my head I just hope i don't have a hemorrhage or something. They did a CT scan and said everything looked fine but there's something wrong damnit.

As far as the knees go, it mostly hurts putting pressure below the knee cap. I had surgery to remove bone fragments in my knees which have been there over 7 years.

Another set of bad knees here. Acl repair and a couple scopes have limited my range of motion. Thankfully they don't hurt like most people with bad knees.

I have been researching a lot of techniques that don't require a super bent knee to perform. Sweeps and subs from the inverted guard have really caught my interest lately.

I've got a messed up knee and I take glucosamine, hla and cissus and I notice a big increase in mobility.

You should work on getting your ROM(Range of motion) first. Do some leg extensions and leg curls... these excercises helped me get my range of motion back to 100%.

HLA? Never heard of it. More info please. Tried to google it but nothing precise to a supplement came up.

Yep. Doing all those and seeing a ART (tissue-massage therapy) specialist too. It is getting there. Thanks for the help though.

Doesn't sound like a good idea but I know guys who have had knee problems and wear knee braces and don't consider it an issue

Update to an old thread:

Got total knee replacement on June 4, 2013.

The goal of a good knee is -1 degrees extension and 135 degrees flexion.

Before surgery I was at 5 and 110.

Almost one month after surgery I am at 8.5 and 103.

Goal is to be 150% of my pre-surgery self by the end of July.

Currently I am walking with only a barely noticeably limp, I can up and down stairs normally. Just got back from riding the stationary bike at level 5 for 20 minutes.

Gettin' there.......
