BJ Penn Jiu jItsu Case Study (content request)

Haha thanks, i'm actually not that great of a teacher. I tend to go off on tangents, I find it hard to be succinct and often I lack the ability to troubleshoot problems people have if they haven't happened to me... did I mention I go off on tangents?
My biggest problem teaching is I'm OCD in a really bizarre way. I'm so detail intensive it can slow down practice too much

Demian Maia also makes a living with the dope mount. There are numerous case studies...you basically get a passing seminar if you watch his match with Ryan LaFlare.

He absolutely dominated Rory on the mat in a way that I've never seen before or since as well, and I believe he used the dope mount there, plus also against Gunnar.

God, Maia is fucking awesome.

It was mentioned in another thread, but the way Maia uses the folding pass is pretty much perfect for mma.

In pure grappling putting the other guys shoulders on the mat is one of the first major hurdles to jump vs a situp guard. In mma however, putting your fist on the other guys face is a very expedient and reliable method of accomplishing this task. Once so accomplished, the way you smother the guy while performing the pass is another factor in its usefulness by keeping him pinned beneath you.

In mma guys are always looking to use their legs to elevate you, push you away, and generally just make space to either escape, or dive under you for a single leg (incidentally, that is also a major facet of maia's game). When dealing with this maia constantly twists his hips back and forth to push his opponents hooks at weak angles, collapsing them and folding them onto their side, into position for the final stages of the pass.

Now that I think about it, I feel like this pass could also be effective against guys looking to use leg entanglements. In some of the montages of Eddie Cummings' game I've seen, one of the major entries into the saddle from butterfly that he uses (dubbed the 'wolverine' by this commentator) basically puts himself in a sort of dope mount position.

In a battle of strength vs strength I'm not sure who comes out on top in that situation, I want to say that the guy on top can have a leverage advantage though. I imagine it would depend on first, if the bottom guy can elevate you, and second, if he can extend the leg and knock you on your butt, solidifying the contrary position.

This is a pretty spot on breakdown of his game, Maia's passing is also on my breakdown bucket list lol (I have pretty much every pass he has done in mma giffed) and I also noticed Maia tends to "play the guards he passes".

Maia is a great study into some of the intricacies of top game bjj for mma, his methods of defeating frames and cage work are beautiful. Not to mention his ability to do this...

Normally when people ask, "how do I use bjj for mma" they really mean "how do I keep my teeth on the bottom" Maia is a great study on how top game bjj has its own set of subtleties too.

Just FYI, if we are dissecting BJ's game, his pioneering utilization of the dope mount is awesome, but I can think of at least two other areas that really need to be covered: 1. Near-side underhook passing in Halfguard. 2. Back control.

I don't have the time to try and do justice to either of those, but I'll throw out the thought and maybe make a weak attempt sometime later.

The nearside, underhook pass is my go to from half, if they block the nearside underhook I go regular underhook and knee cut, it's really hard for bottom guy to stop you from getting an underhook on one of his sides
