It was mentioned in another thread, but the way Maia uses the folding pass is pretty much perfect for mma.
In pure grappling putting the other guys shoulders on the mat is one of the first major hurdles to jump vs a situp guard. In mma however, putting your fist on the other guys face is a very expedient and reliable method of accomplishing this task. Once so accomplished, the way you smother the guy while performing the pass is another factor in its usefulness by keeping him pinned beneath you.
In mma guys are always looking to use their legs to elevate you, push you away, and generally just make space to either escape, or dive under you for a single leg (incidentally, that is also a major facet of maia's game). When dealing with this maia constantly twists his hips back and forth to push his opponents hooks at weak angles, collapsing them and folding them onto their side, into position for the final stages of the pass.
Now that I think about it, I feel like this pass could also be effective against guys looking to use leg entanglements. In some of the montages of Eddie Cummings' game I've seen, one of the major entries into the saddle from butterfly that he uses (dubbed the 'wolverine' by this commentator) basically puts himself in a sort of dope mount position.
In a battle of strength vs strength I'm not sure who comes out on top in that situation, I want to say that the guy on top can have a leverage advantage though. I imagine it would depend on first, if the bottom guy can elevate you, and second, if he can extend the leg and knock you on your butt, solidifying the contrary position.
