BJ Penn is an all time great. Why??

People are talking like he beat giants as a small man.

Bj Penn 5'9
Matt Hughes 5'9

Matt Sera 5'6

You've been here for years and you're seriously using fightfinder and win % to summarise a fighters career???

Come on man. If you can't watch BJ Penns career and prime and come to the conclusion that he is an all time great then that's on you.

Well, he shouldn't have lost the first Pulver fight, The Uno draw was BS as well.

He had a competitive fight with HW Lyoto Machida before losing a fight that could have went either way with the GOAT WW.

That same GOAT WW cheated the next time they fought and is now the only reason why the ufc cut men have to apply vaseline to fighters.

He also beat Edgar in the first fight but since Edgar wrecked him in the next 2 fights it really doesn't matter.

This is like shitting on Sakuraba for being horrible 10+ years after his prime

Too much emphasis on "He moved up and fought bigger dudes. He had balls. He was never scared of a challenge. He'd fight anybody"

Big fucking whoop.

Big fucking whoop? It's literally the idea of fighting. Why are you more impressed or happy with guys fighting in their comfort zone with all these fake handicaps in place. BJ is the epitome of fighting.

The man will retire with a .500 record. Who the fuck is an all-time great that retires with a record like that? At 30 years old Frankie beat him down. Quite frankly embarrassed him. This dude is literally the most overrated fighter in the history of the sport. Honestly that shit isn’t even close.

amen..............AFUKNMEN............

I was saying this before his fall from grace.

The delusion has always been strong. People used to chalk his loss to a fat green Machida where he got face stomped as the jewel in the crown of his résumé.

That is why he’s overrated as hell. People want to make excuses for all of the losses.
Excuse is a harsh word. He mainly lost to guys alot bigger than himself. Is that an excuse? He lost fair and square but he is challenging himself in a way NO ONE does today. (No not connor, no one) His LW record is impressive

16-16 record. Lost to Frankie in his prime twice. Never really was dominant like other champs in any division. Bounced around too much. Also never worked hard..

Ok. I thought you were being serious Haha. You got me!

Who cares if you lose 100 fights in a row when you’re way past your prime. He was a great fighter during his prime and that’s what matters. I think he would have lots of problems with today’s lightweights, but he is an iconic figure of the sport and he was one of the very best during his prime.

I, amongst many others, appreciate a guy with balls. His legacy is “ruined” for those wiki page fan boys who’s own self confidence is derived purely from another person’s win loss record.

Ducking fights, avoiding tougher challenges, being content and careful, selective opponents, not going for finishes, playing it safe, winning by points, making excuses not to fight.... some people like those kinds of fighters too. BJ is not one of those.

Because BJ reached a level of greatness before TS started potty training, same with Fedor.

They've both lost since then, and should have retired, but what they already accomplished can't be changed by losses or bar brawls.

Just because there may have been better movies than 2001 or Godfather Pt 1, does that now mean that those two movies suck? No. They're still considered some of the greatest movies of all time.

His footwork & JJ was wizard & is still better than the majority of MMA advancements I’ve seen today.

As far as his Alcoholic Endeavors, they don’t call it the, “Watering Hole” for nothing .

No shame in losing to Frankie and every fighter's record gets worse when they have as many fights as Bj and still fighting at 40 years old. Plus he never popped fir roids like most of his opponents

riiiight...

What really hyped him for me was Penn moving from LW to MW and beating Rodrigo Gracie easily... remarkable natural athlete.
Nobody dares do that in MMA... That's like 3 boxing weight classes skipped.

It was because of his accomplishments during the era in which he came up. He did legendary work in those days. He was the top of the food chain for some time.

1-1 with Hughes in their primes. 0-2 with GSP They both violently finished him in a rematch. Sorry have to do better than that. BJ Penn’s overall record is awful. Absolutely awful. 30 years old Frankie was beating the hell out of him.

So you don’t count one of his wins over Hughes bc it wasn’t his prime but you count all of bjs losses after his prime? Makes sense. Gsp and Hughes are not in his weight class but in my opinion he beat them both. How about the 5 years he spent as the top guy in his own weight class? He took out Sherk and gomi, those were the only two guys who could even be mentioned as the second best during that era. Frankie and B.J. were close fights, not beat downs and obviously by the way bjs career took a dive after, during his decline.

30 year old Frankie was in his prime. Why are you referencing 30 like it is something bad?

All time great with the most tarnished legacy.
