BJ Penn was the top P4P fighter for a time, he was the consensus best LW in the world on multiple occasions and he beat the WW champion, just because he eventually started losing doesn’t mean he wasn’t great.

The dude never seemed to take his fitness or training very seriously but he was still the best, once he got older those things caught up to him.

IMO he should’ve only fought at LW but he was a badass that wanted to fight anyone at any weight.

He was extremely well rounded, well before others were. He's still more well rounded than a lot of guy competing today. BJ was way ahead of his time, skillwise. He didn't seem to have the consistency or dedication though.

I'm not a huge BJ fan and have always considered him overrated. But, he said have some big wins over big names and going up to 170 was cool. He didnt have the mindset of a champion, he was always hungry for the gold but once he got a taste he got lazy, imo.

I recall watching the embedded or whatever it was at the time for BJ v GSP and GSP is working his ass off while BJ is sleeping on the beach and snorkeling all day. Pretty stark contrast between a champ and someone with a lot of skill but lazy.

You're conflating being a warrior with being foolish. Gsp is highly respectable in every sense of a fighter. Bj Penn doesn't properly prepare for his fights and realistically evaluate his results of his performance and that's why he's been humiliating himself for a decade

1-1 with Hughes in their primes. 0-2 with GSP They both violently finished him in a rematch. Sorry have to do better than that. BJ Penn’s overall record is awful. Absolutely awful. 30 years old Frankie was beating the hell out of him.

Yeah he lost to Hughes & twice to GSP, both guys who were huge Welterweights when BJ realistically shouldn't have been fighting any higher than 155. The fact is he challenged himself unlike most fighters nowadays by actively seeking out dangerous opponents which as well as Hughes & GSP include Nick Diaz, Rory McDonald, Jon Fitch & a Heavyweight Machida who were all considerably larger fighters. And lets not overlook that he tapped Hughes for the WW belt in what was at the time one of the sport's biggest upsets & became one of the UFC's few two weight champions.

If BJ would have stuck to fighting only at 155/ 145 plus retired eight years ago his record would be considerably different. The fact that he loves fighting & more importantly testing himself & also carried on well past his prime doesn't detract from his earlier achievements.

For me this sport is far more than win/ loss records as so many variables & other factors to consider & I certainly view BJ as a legend of the sport. However if that's your number one factor then I'll certainly concede that BJ's record isn't great.
