BJ Penn and Randy Couture Overrated?

Nah they are both rated just fine.
Penn might even be underrated.

BJ was pretty darn impressive.

I think his win/loss ratio took a bit of a hit because he stayed in the game too long, and fought at less-than-ideal weight classes.

I mean he was fighting Lyoto !@#$ing machida at some point. Dude was a warrior, not necessarily the smartest sportsman, though.

BJ Penn has a terrible win streak. The guy is nothing special. He fought tough competition but there are others that have fought harder. Dude was barely even a gate keeper. Bisping ranks higher than him in my books since he's only lost to guys on steroids which is even tougher competition than BJ Penn. I can't for the life of me understand this guy's fan base. What do they cheer on? He never beat the top 3, lost to Hughes, GSP, Edgar x 3, Diaz, pretty much everyone out there. He had one good streak in the early days of UFC, but as soon as competition got tough he lost every round. Name one big name he beat.

I stopped taking you serious at Bisping. Bisping never won a title, never fought for a title and was lobbed softballs for the vast majority of his carreer so the UFC could break into the british market. He has lost to more than a few fighters who were never champs themselves.

BJ consistently fought the best, in fact, most of bj's losses are to fighters who are still elite today.

There is really no comparison. If you look farther than fightfinder, and actually watch the fights, you will also see that there is no comparison in their skillsets either.

dont see BJ on that list. where u at, BJ??

Obviously, the list is old because Conor is #1 now.

Can't say BJ is overrated. He fought nothing but top guys his whole career. And at his peak, he may of been the best MMA fighter on the planet imo..

But I'm a BJ nuthugger so don't listen to me.

you speak nothing but truth.

Penn is one of the sport's best LW's, and he fought good competition outside of that division as well.

Couture has some good wins as well, and I feel his legacy would be better had he not started so late. He was always an old guy in sports logic.

Both deserve their recognition as legends of the sport.

Lol I made a thread like an year ago saying that Randy Couture was overrated and got completely butchered. Hope you're ready for the incoming flame war TS.

Edit: Too late

top guys?

such as joe daddy, kenflo, ludwig?

penn is clearly overrated.

couture doesnt get the love and blind nutthuggery that penn gets.

i dont think couture is overrated. he fought tough guys, won some, and lost some. he was a two division champ and fought most everyone.

19/30 = 63%...

16/26 = 61.5%

you can't count draws as losses or wins so throw them out... also how do you do math?

Loved the answer, after 6 pages of answers, someone actually had brains to do the basic math.

answering the question, the numbers seems to be: 10/16 and 11/19. The the TS has no idea how to calculate average :)

Great for their time. Just like Fedor was great for his time, now he wouldn't even be top 5.

...and in the future, fighters of today will be overshadowed by future talent. In the evolution of combat, fighters will keep becoming even more well-rounded.

Time, how does it work?!

Do you think people didn't cross train and couldn't grasp the concept of fighting 10-15 years ago?
Do You think boxers now are better than fighters from the 70s and 80s?

i love how penn gets credit for his losses. he lost to a bigger and very inexperienced machida.

just to clarify, all losses are equal regardless of opponent and how one loses?

Randy yes. BJ no way. One of the greatest ever. Just looking at records doesn't say much. Father Time makes everyone seem mediocre.
