Bigger win: Couture over Sylvia or Cormier over Miocic?

Handy randy by a mile
Randy didn't go on to get his ass kicked by Tim twice after, and didn't rely on an eyepoke to get a finish.
Cormier was the champion at lhw who had spent most his career there and was undefeated in the weight class, and had only ever lost to the UFC GOAT
Randy was an old man nobody gave a chance and he annihilated Tim
This really isn't close wtf lol

Just watched Couture/Sylvia for the first time. Got into the sport a year after so i've always heard about it, but never actually watched it. Godamn it was huge at the time. The crowd was so wild. It also seemed like Couture was completely counted out.

My question is, how does it compare to DC (also the undersized old HW fighter facing the champ in his prime) beating Miocic?
Stipe is a better fighter than Tim was, so that win is better.
However, Randy's win over Tim was so unexpected and insane that it will forever be one of the most impressive wins in MMA history.

I agree that Stipe was slightly more skilled, but that's normal with smaller guys. Tim was too big to look good.

Also the evolution thing doesn't really work in a division with sluggers like Tai, Lewis and even Francis.

These are not examples of crisp striking. Lewis dude, fucking Lewis is a thing.

And if you try to tell me that Lewis is somehow a skilled striker while Tim isn't then you're just flat out lying.

The evolution thing is you falling for marketing.
The evolution is real. That the actual MMA is better or more entertaining is a different thing. MMA today is more about being as well rounded as possible, rather than just excelling at your base style (20 years ago)

Fighters (including HW's) are more equipped to deal with a different variarity of tactics from the opponent. Alot to think about. Where as the last gen of fighters could simply gameplan for the one dimensional style of the opponent without much worry. Today you have to worry about alot of different things. Especially in the octagon. Also take into consideration new found knowledge of nutrition and training methods.

That is the evolution of the game so far. Love it or hate it, it's the truth.

I think you can't really compare.
DC is the better fighter between the two.
And Miocic if far more talented than Tymmeh
But the audience at that time LOVED Randy, and it was a far bigger win for Randy because of it...

Randy was more of an upset but Stipe was the bigger win at the time.

Nope. I mentioned Lewis and you said some generic shit.

Not playing this game.

Cormier's win shouldn't count for shit considering he repeatedly eye poked Stipe in that fight and that was probably the reason Stipe didn't see the punch that dropped him.

Couture IMO...

But goddamn I would have loved to see Brock vs Big Tim!

Couture without question

Miocic was the established #1 HW in the world, Sylvia wasnt even top3, so I dont know how can you say Couture's was the better win.
Maybe more inspirational or whatever but bigger/greater? Nope

Randy was
  • 43
  • coming out of retirement
  • coming off of getting KO'd by Liddell at LHW
Meanwhile DC was:
  • 39
  • the reigning LHW champion
  • coming off of regaining the LHW title against Volkan (call it a defence if you want, but even DC calls it re-winning the title after Jones KO'd him)
Randy's was by far the more unexpected win, as well as personal and athletic accomplishment, but Cormier's win was the bigger historical win accomplishment wise considering Cormier and Stipe were both at their heights.

That said, the fact that Cormier ultimately lost the trilogy 1-2 does rather dampen it a bit. Couture never rematched Sylvia no (in part because Sylvia failed to win the interim belt against Nog), so we've only got the one fight to go off of as to whether he was truly the better fighter. Meanwhile we know that Cormier ultimately wasn't better than Stipe, and perhaps never should've won the first fight (especially considering the eyepoke).
