Bigger win: Couture over Sylvia or Cormier over Miocic?

Couture vs Sylvia

Couture coming back at his age and a very undersized HW against a fairly cerebral 6'8 striker. Sylvia was capable of doing big things, but he was also cool with winning at all costs, so demolishing Randy or playing it safe both seemed possible. Sylvia is massively, massively underrated by newer fans here. He was a good fighter.

Cormier was still considered in his prime the first time he fought Stipe, even if he probably wasn't anymore. It's an impressive win but in the grand scheme of things, DC winning isn't all that surprising.

Everyone says Tim isn't on the level of Miocic, but I for one think Prime Tim wouldn't have been an easy fight for Miocic.

Miocic is hittable. Tim's TDD wasn't that bad. IF Struve can knock his ass out, Tim sure as hell can.

People forget how good Tim used to be. Tim also had a hell of a chin. He went 23-2 with only two submission losses in his prime.

Honestly, Arlovski who fought Fedor, and Tim that fought Arlovski were def good enough to beat Miocic in my opinion.

Miocic has good boxing and good wrestling and tough as nails, but prime Tim, prime Arlovski I can see beating him.

I mean prime JDS probably beats Stipe. Washed up JDS did already.

I agree.

What was even more impressive was Couture handing Gonzaga his ass right after as well. 255 pound BJJ ace who just demolished Cro Cop with a headkick. Lots of people counted Randy out of that fight. People point to the broken nose as an excuse but that's, like, kinda what Randy did. He grinded and his dirty boxing was suffocating.

As a community we really missed out on not getting Fedor vs Randy.

Just watched Couture/Sylvia for the first time. Got into the sport a year after so i've always heard about it, but never actually watched it. Godamn it was huge at the time. The crowd was so wild. It also seemed like Couture was completely counted out.

My question is, how does it compare to DC (also the undersized old HW fighter facing the champ in his prime) beating Miocic?
You can't say Cormier vs Stipe was a big upset.

With Sylvia, no one knew at that time that he was largely done with his MMA career and in 3 fights he would be facing Ray Mercer.

Why are some of you assholes discrediting every past fighter ever? The fuck is wrong with you? Has that "new breed" talk eaten your brains?

Tim was a giant man, and he was pretty fast and accurate for his size. Pretty flexible too considering he looked like he was built from shit.

He was someone that made Arlovski look normal sized. Just like Stipe has a counter win over Werdum, Tim had one of those over Arlovski, and prime Arlovski was a stud.

Tim vs Stipe would be a hell of a fight. If Struve could KO Stipe so could Tim. A giant man that could punch is not an easy fight.

Couture's won was bigger. He dominated Sylvia at 44 years old. That first overhand right he dropped him with was classic. I was always a big Handy fan so I'm biased

I respect your passion my man, dont think anyone discredited Sylvia so far in this thread. He was a puzzle for the challengers in his time.

To be fair though (trying to be ) his style wouldn't fare well today. Sylvia vs. Miocic would be a snuff film type of fight. Miocic does whatever he wants to Sylvia.

I knew that Mercer fight was a bad idea. Mercer at 50 probably is best hw boxer in mma back then and even now.

And that stupid tattoo makes Tim even look dumber too.
Wnat tat?
Tim walking around I'm Maine with his belt on was gold back in the day.
I almost got in a scrap with him at UFC 57 because of the whore he was with .
Steroid Timmay was a force to be reckoned with tho

In shape Tim was no joke, oh well.

No one gave Couture a chance. Lots of people thought DC would win.
Did alot of people think DC would win though? Based on what?

I do remember alot of people predicting Ngannou was going to starch Stipe back at 220, but Stipe outboxed and outwrestled him. In my mind, DC didn't have a chance.

All he had was reach. With that much of an advantage, you throw enough punches, one’s gonna land. And being a roided 265lbs, there’s gonna be weight behind it

Buzzwords buddy, you're just using buzzwords. "Style", "Today", they don't mean anything. What style?

You have 2 guys, that are big, can hit hard, one of them bigger, one with slightly more skill. Both HW champs with multiple defences.

So where is this certainty coming from? Why can't you just be real about it and say that you don't know. Cause you don't, none of us do.

I don't know, you are right about that. All we can do is to make predictions based on fight history.

Everything Sylvia did, Stipe did much better. Jab, boxing combos, stopping power and grappling. Stipe has shown much better skills in these areas.

The evolution of the game is also one thing to consider. It's not easy today to just jab and reset the way Sylvia did.

Couture over Sylvia was the bigger upset, but Stipe is a better fighter than Sylvia so it depends on how you look at it.

Cormier’s win over stipe is very controversial and not concise whatsoever.

Way, way too many eye pokes in a short period, including 3 seconds before the KO blow that nobody saw.

Absolutely not a clean win and stipe thoroughly proved he was better without controversy after.

We should all be forever grateful to Couture for ending Sylvia's reign of wall n' stall.

Couture winning was MUCH more unexpected. I was fully expecting Cormier to win vs Miocic.

Coutoure's win was more awesome though, remember that entire fight very vividly.

I think he only fought like that when he was champ. I think that was only 2 or 3 fights.

I agree that Stipe was slightly more skilled, but that's normal with smaller guys. Tim was too big to look good.

Also the evolution thing doesn't really work in a division with sluggers like Tai, Lewis and even Francis.

These are not examples of crisp striking. Lewis dude, fucking Lewis is a thing.

And if you try to tell me that Lewis is somehow a skilled striker while Tim isn't then you're just flat out lying.

The evolution thing is you falling for marketing.
