Just watched Couture/Sylvia for the first time. Got into the sport a year after so i've always heard about it, but never actually watched it. Godamn it was huge at the time. The crowd was so wild. It also seemed like Couture was completely counted out.

My question is, how does it compare to DC (also the undersized old HW fighter facing the champ in his prime) beating Miocic?

Couture's win was a big upset, if not at the very least a sizable upset.

Cormier vs Stipe Miocic was a close fight.

Tim was hurt going into that fight, if they had insurances back then like they do now where everyone pulls out with smallest injuries, I'm fairly sure that fight never happened cuz Tim got a surgery on his back afterwards for that injury AFTER that fight. Imagine fighting a world class wrestler with a back injury severe enough for a surgery? That's what Tim did.

Tim was really good though unpopular. But very unlucky. I don't think Tim loses to Couture healthy. If he didn't lose to Couture, he may never ended up fighting Mercer because even if with loss to Nog, he would've still been a former UFC hw champ with FOUR defenses. Miocic also has four total defenses.

Unfortunate.

This is a very tough call. Much bigger upset is Couture, but that win over Miocic really changed the narrative on Cormier. Without Jone's self destruction, he would have been a champ at neither hw or lhw as well but that was a huge win for Cormier, making him a double champ.

At the end of the day, given the forum reactioin, much bigger win is Couture over Sylvia.

Sylvia wasn't on the level of Stipe. Stipe's widely considered UFC HW best. And 2007 was HW transitioning period because of Pride purchase. So the HW division was all over the place. While DC beating Stipe made him the #1 ranked HW in the world. Couture beating Sylvia made him the 6th best HW back then.

But the win was result of the eye poke and Stipe won the other 2. Couture's win was a clean domination.

So if we talk purely result then DC beating Stipe. If we talk validity and skills on display then Couture's win is better.

That first big punch Couture landed was epic.

Can't really remember much of the rest of that fight.

Tim would have been on a 8 fight winning streak at heavyweight. Oh well.

Everyone says Tim isn't on the level of Miocic, but I for one think Prime Tim wouldn't have been an easy fight for Miocic.

Miocic is hittable. Tim's TDD wasn't that bad. IF Struve can knock his ass out, Tim sure as hell can.

People forget how good Tim used to be. Tim also had a hell of a chin. He went 23-2 with only two submission losses in his prime.

Honestly, Arlovski who fought Fedor, and Tim that fought Arlovski were def good enough to beat Miocic in my opinion.

Miocic has good boxing and good wrestling and tough as nails, but prime Tim, prime Arlovski I can see beating him.

I mean prime JDS probably beats Stipe. Washed up JDS did already.

Randy beating Tim was a lot bigger. Randy was a fan favorite but most people thought he was too old and wouldn't be able to handle Tim. He was also probably around 35-40 lbs lighter and was going for the belt for a third time.

Randy trained with Tim and was pretty sure he'd work Tim over. Came out of retirement for what he thought was an easy fight for him. Pretty sure DC thought he could beat Stipe the first fight, but, never trained with him and never thought he was an easy fight.

Terms of optics, will say Couture. Guy got off the couch to do that. The three fights with DC and Stipe showed they all could have went either way any three of those fights. We never got to see that with Randy and Tim, because, nobody wanted that and Tim was through of to be a boring champ during that time, after him and Arlovski looking at each other.

Randy's big overhand right on Tim was iconic back in the day. Being a fan then made that more of a memorable fight for me.

I will agree with other posters that Tim did do a lot as a hw back then. I can't blame Tim for the competition level of then vs now. He was the guy for a bit.

I think Stipe is a better win,but Randy, already an overachiever, kind of smashed expectations, considering how dominant he was against Tim..AND Gonzaga. Lookin at them in the stair down, you thought DAMN. Old Man Randy might get sparked out here.

Hell, probably the most underated fighter of all time. A bad luck, badly managed career.

Great post, nice to see someone other than Goober acknowledge Big Tim.

Hope Goober's doing all right. I respected that man for being Tim's fan. It couldn't have been easy lol.

Tim's probably the most under-rated fighter of all time. Oh well. Life can be cruel sometimes, but hey he has a lot to be proud of anyways.

Yeah he’s easily top three most underrated. He should really be in the hof but Dana will always hold that Mercer fight against him.

I knew that Mercer fight was a bad idea. Mercer at 50 probably is best hw boxer in mma back then and even now.

And that stupid tattoo makes Tim even look dumber too.

In shape Tim was no joke, oh well.

Tim was hurt? I mean fighters not being 100% for the big show is expected, but i didn't know Tim was hurt that bad. Why not pull out?

At this point he was already the most dominant HW champion ever, starred in date shows and had alot of attention overall.

He got a surgery on that lower back AFTER the fight. I don't know ANYONE who fought with a back injury serious enough to get a surgery for THAT injury after that fight. And to fight a world class wrestler with that back? Good luck with that.

Probably because UFC didn't have the insurance for fighters they one day decided to instill that made fighter pull outs so much more common.
