Absolutely they can. The problem with most of our perceptions of this world is that our reality is a lie, and our lies are the reality. As long as they can keep making us believe in the lies, those lies will be our reality. Just because we can't see it, touch it, or observe it doesn't mean it doesn't exist, it just makes it harder to believe in, thus making it highly unlikely to most of the population.
I guarantee traveling around the world, interacting with different cultures, and observing how other people live will definitely change how you view the world and what is considered real and not real.
