Best striking art for practical self-defense?

Here's some more grand advise:
1) A double leg takedown is your best friend. I don't care if you already have a best friend. You can tell him, "Hey, I like you and all but, I have a double leg now." Most of the people you meet, have NO idea what to do with their body when someone grabs their legs. Their first instinct is to do hammer fists to your back, but a few tenths of a second later they're on their backs and thinking, "What the fuck, is this guy trying to rape me!?"

2) Boxing is your best friend's little brother, but not the annoying one. He's the cool one that lies to your best-friend's parents to get you to go out late on school nights. A good 1-2-3 (Jab, straight, hook) will be about as complicated as you'll need it to get. Train your brush block and high guard because a lot of gangsters and tough guys use haymakers.

3) Conditioning - Everyone has some grand scheme on conditioning or some magical routine. The bottom line is, you need to get good conditioning in the most basic way possible and that's by doing what it is that you're training to do in longer periods of time. Box and grapple for 5 minutes medium intensity, take a break for 1 minute, then again for 5 minutes. Repeat this cycle until you can box/grapple for 5 rounds straight and your conditioning will be top notch.

Sure there's off-season/non-training conditioning regimes that work, but you want to concentrate your off-season on strength training. A good pulling strength will help you a lot with your take-downs. Do a lot of pull ups, get a hold of a barbell and do bent over rows, dead lifts. Those help your wrestling a lot.

Boxing is an excellent choice no doubt. Improves hand eye coordination, speed, evasive maneuvers and of course gives you the means with which to strike back. If you are looking for an art thats street savvy and can prepare you for a variety of situations then I would recommend Krav Maga.

Anyone know of good Silat or even Kali in Manhattan or Brooklyn, NY? Just curious, thanks.

Practical self-defence?

Try sprinting and parkour.

I'd say wing chun, krav maga. The simultaneous punch and block for knife defense in krav maga actually came from WT. You need something for self defense that addresses weapons.

For self defense you need an art that is unsporting.

good advice especially point 1 and the haymakers from gangsters and tough guys.

depends on how much you want to train if you go below 2hours a week krav maga
if you want to train more than 2hours ad cardio/weight training and mauy thai

i don`t get the boxing hype on here
boxing is just good wen there is no mauy thai/sanda/kickboxing etc school in your neighborhood

I train Boxing and Muay Thai and i have to say they're both best for street or ring use.
Boxing with develop your hands much much much more and make you stop being scared of getting hit alitttle while Muay Thai will teach you other stuff that are very usefull in self defence...

i'd go with MT why go with boxing and only use 25% of your arsenal?

Go to your local boxing gym and say this...lemme know what happens.

25% of your arsenal that is used in like 90% of all striking exchanges in MMA or in a 'self defence' situation.

I've seeen drunks/guys on drugs shrug off groin attacks, leg kicks, head butts etc. The only cast iron way of dropping people like that is a KO punch to the jaw/chin.

Boxing is the No1 way of delivering that.

first off, i'd like to see these drunk guys you speak of. second off, i'd like to see these drunk guys shake off a knee to the face or a head kick

Regardless of whatever striking art someone chooses for self defense,
they'll be at a big advantage over the general population who are very likely to have not been punched or kicked since kindergarten.
A cross + hook combo from a trained fighter will put you on your ass.

you wont see to many pro boxers lose a street fight

Where I live, Wollongong Australia, there was a time when you couldn't go out on the town without someone claiming that "a mate of a mate had smacked out" our local championship-level pro boxer.
