Best striking art for practical self-defense?

He is only 5'4

What so you are saying he can't use the clinch? Maybe he should just stay on the outside and out box his opponents with his stubby little arms instead? Think that'd be more effective? If he ends up in the clinch he'll need to know what to do.

MT is the best for the streets. Thai knee to the balls is deadly.

No I'm suggesting he stay on the outside and leg kick his adversary. Are you suggesting that he use his stubby little arms to try and use the Plum against a taller Adversary in a self defense confrontation ? <<< See what I did there ?

Use your brain why would I suggest that. I am merely stating he is 5'4 the way you worded your message made it appear as if you weren't aware of his height. I didn't even factor in his weight. I don't know about the law over theRE in Singapore but here in America if you are using the Plum for self defense think of the damage you will inflict.

Broken ribs, possibly a severe damage to the face and retina. There is so much damage on can cause with this move it could lead to a lawsuit. Plus if you factor in the clinch your focus is only on one person so the enemy friend could be behind you. But I do get what you're saying, nothing wrong with knowing how to defend against such tech.

There is just another side to the coin.

Good point's but u forgot it's easier to get stabbed in the clinch cause your so close to your attacker if you don't have control of both his hands he could reach into his pocket pull out a knife and do more damage to you then your knees and elbows will do to him

To just elaborate on my point a little in the Standing clinch you could get stabbed in the rib/lung area the chest stomach and back.

And from the Thai plum clinch you could get stabbed in the groin and that long vein in the inner thigh that bleeds alot

You did notice the bit I put about 'If he ends up in the clinch he'll need to know what to do'
Well this goes for you and the guy who mentioned getting stabbed in the clinch. I would not enter the clinch by choice nor would I advise anyone to do so but if someone taller or shorter grabs hold of you in it would help a lot to know how to clinch. And there is more than just the plum as far as clinching goes. Learning how to throw effective knee strikes to the body or thighs would be very effective if you were under attack especially against a taller opponent as you will tend to be underneath them any way if you are close enough to strike back. Yes leg kicks could be effective but not something I'd want to rely on in a street fight as they don't finish things that fast with adrenaline flowing.

Oh and 5'4" in Singapore probably isn't particularly short.

I get what ur saying and i agree but in the situation u point out IMO the judo clinch would be more effective then the MT clinch. Think about it against a taller opponent u would be underneath them so throwing them head first onto pavement would finnish them a lot faster then knee strikes plus u can end the clinch faster with a throw so u can focus on multiple attackers rather than being stuck clinching the 1 guy.

Also if what u said about singapore peoples height wasnt true i'd think your kinda racist :icon_chee

lol I have a couple of friends from Singapore and they'd back me up. 5'4" is shorter than average but not as short as it would be relatively in the US or the Netherlands.

Yeah Judo would be great but this is about the best striking art so it's automatically excluded. Muay Thai has some excellent throwing techniques from the clinch. You only have to watch a MT specialist versus a K1 fighter to see that.

Boxing and Muay Thai is a sick combination, if your gym already teaches those then take those up.
But for pure street fighting/self defense, Keysi is about as effective as they come.
I don't know if you'll be able to find any classes near to where you live. If you live in Europe you have a better chance of finding a class.
KFM • The Keysi Fighting Method
Thats the website, I think there might be school locations on their somewhere.

have someone ever punched a guy in the street, bareknuckle?

how about broken wrist/hand?

it's like hitting the heavybag full power without gloves and handweaps...
skull bones vs hands bones.

when you'll broke your wrists/hands after 2 shots, you'll want to know how to use elbows and knees.

Oh right i forgot we were talking strictly striking styles. I think Sanda Kung Fu and San Shou Kung Fu have better throwing techniques from the clinch though im not 100% sure but those would be some better styles IMO for TS to do.

If you know how to punch properly and where to punch u wont break ur hands obviously punching a skull will damage ur hands but punching a nose or jaw wont plus if u have shitty technique with ur punches your wrist may buckle but if u know how to punch u got nothing to worry about

I read that website looks like a total crock especially the history of the MA it sounds like something out of a fiction novel i would suggest staying away from those guys. There con-artists IMO

I wasn't aware that 5'4 wasn't that short over there. I'm too use to the people over here being taller than me :icon_chee. The clinch is an art within it self. It's not so easy to get good at, wouldn't he be better off pushing away and trying to run for it?

You're better off with open hand/palm strikes. I heard Mike Tyson use to break his hand in many club fights.

Yeah i do a lot of hand/palm strikes in Wing Chun and some in Karate but that doesn't change the fact that if u know what your doing u shouldent break your hand maybe tyson was drunk in those fights or wasnt sure how hard he could hit without the gloves on

Yes. A left hook and I canned my little finger.
I also managed to kick myself in the ass with my heel..

I chose boxing personally. I have to wear these ridiculously heavy steel toe boots to work so it makes kicking slow and a bit awkward.
