From Lecrae's "Truth":

I promise everybody is asking the same questions
"Who am I? What is my purpose and my direction? "
Y'probably believe that you exist for no other reason
Than Self-satisfaction, hedonism and pleasing things
Life's about you getting' yours and bein' happy
Even if it means a divorce and switchin' families?
Your job, your house, your car, your spouse
It's all for the glory of you, else you out
You go to school get y' degrees and get a job
So you can make a whole lotta' g's cause' lifes hard
You never thought of livin to please a real God
And that's the reason he made you
See, he gave you breathe to breathe the chest to breathe it.
So you can taste and see He's the best, believe it
He made us for His glory and not for your own homey
Our God is Holy. You should repent and die slowly

Every one of their songs sounds like a basement cypher. The songs that do have hooks are cringeworthy and the production is bad. Royce Da 5'9 is terrible. Crooked I is terrible. Joell and Budden are decent. Not much of a group, IMO.

They can't pick a beat for the life of them, which puts them on par with Chino XL, K-Rino, Ras Kass, and all the other guys who were supposed to blow up but never did anything. All were tremendous on the mic though.

Chino XL is horrible too. Ras Kass is the man though.

From Lecrae's "Misconception":

So many mis... conceptions- missin' the mark- mis-directed- drivin' reckless and aggressive
Fueled by our false perceptions- our methods need corrections-
Spittin venom in their face and violate the ones we should protect it's an attempt to motivate
Neglect our obligations place the blame on someone else point out the flaws in other people and take the focus off ourselves
Those who have been abused

I Self Lord And Master, shall bring disaster to evil factors
Demonic chapters, shall be captured by Kings
Through the storms of days after
Unto the Earth from the Sun through triple darkness to blast ya
with a force that can't be compared
to any firepower, for it's mindpower shared
The brainwake, causes vessels to circulate
like constellations reflect at night off the lake
Word to the father, and Mother Earth
Seeking everlasting life through this Hell for what it's worth
Look listen and observe
and watch another C-Cypher pullin my peeps to the curb
Heed the words; it's like ghetto style proverbs
The righteous pay a sacrifice to get what they deserve
Cannot afford to be confined to a cell
Brainwaves swell, turnin a desert to a well
Experience the best teacher; thoughts will spray
like street sweepers Little Daddy street preacher
Illustrious feature, narrator you select

Inspectah Deck & Gang Starr - Above The Clouds

Rather underrated song but I think it shows that no one is more powerful than a person itself, no gun is more powerful than mindpower. Also, that you're responsible for your life, for all the shit that you've created in it and well (not mentioned in the song but my opinion) all the good, too. There is also mentioned , seeking everlasting life through this Hell for what it's worth, shows us seeking the holy-land battling through this hell-ish world beating the obstacles (or for some losing to them) to get to that everlasting life.

Ras Kass should have stayed in jail. All his releases after Soul on Ice were awful.

Yeah most of those 90's era rappers tend to hit a prime and fall off. Then you got a guy like Kanye who debuts in the 2000's who's still making classics a decade later.

As long as a rapper's whole verse isn't about him rapping, I'm cool with it. A couple lines here and there is fine but I wanna hear variety.

Post it up and say what you think it means amigo.

ok, here's prodigy's two verses from Take It In Blood

verse 1

"I'm yawning while I'm waking to the early morning gunfire,
Another day another scar to require,
Jumped out my bed, tried to break my alarm,
Took a shower, and then I strapped on my firearm,
Grabbed my Pelle Pelle cause I wanna look fly when I die,
But it ain't my turn to say goodbye,
How do I know? Some people call it instinct,
I like to call it my luck, who gives a fuck,
I'm stuck, in this environment and can't depart from it,
And if I try I always end up back where I started,
Plan A, square 1, there's no escapin',
So I've come to realize my truth,
Tryna live my full life until my time is through,
Clocks tickin', so I don't got no time for you,
As I head outside, amongst the rest of the animals,
Is where I feel relaxed and safe and I can stand still,
It's sorta like a family bond,
We gather up all the soldiers and form into an invincible swarm of kids, now it's on again, drinking straight from the bottle, warm gin dripping down my chin,
For the ones securing, you can't win against 25 *****s bent up with mac 10 semi-automatics, full-addicted crime addicts,
So long as there is cash involved, I gotta have it,
There's many different levels to the criminal mind,
Either you in it for the money or you wasting your time."

verse 2

"This city got me trapped like an animal with criminal thoughts,
I can't seem to turn away from this unknown force,
If only I can lay my hands on the source of my trouble,
Then maybe I can heal my scar before it bubbles,
It's like a plague, and there ain't no cure,
We observe this world's filth, therefore we're un-pure
My life is like a bad dream I can't seem to shake,
Only my peoples who are equal understand or relate,
The way we live is never planned, it just happened that way,
So until tomorrow I'll just be surviving today,
I'm just another man, on this planet living for death,
Pops gone, I had to learn to be a man myself,
But I, don't stress that,
He did his dirt, now he pays back waiting in a federal laid back,
Pops, times is different and things ain't the same,
It's worse than ever, to get paid we do whatever,
See some rather achieve goals and be a scholar,
I rather get locked like you, earning a 6-digit dollar,
Making the desert bird holler,
Doing white collar crimes, but the fed time is hard to swallow,
And digest so I protest the pen,
I rather die before the jail cell sucks me in,
And my peoples we all share the same thinking,
We all the same on the same tempo, making cowards perpetual,
Pull out the tech, automatic metro,
My shots chase you 'round corners, leaving your family a bunch of mourners,
And I'm all-around, point as that, if you feel me you're guaranteed something you can feel back."

nothing super lyrical, but i loved his flow, plus that grimey production was amazing. p used to be able to paint a real vivid picture

See that Black boy over there, runnin' scared
His ol' man got a problem
Pawned off damn near everything, his ol'
Woman's weddin' ring for a bottle.

Gil Scott-Heron, The Bottle

No outkast or rakim yet...disappointed in you guys

No more indo, gin and juice
I'm on my way to chino, rollin on the grey goose
Shackled from head to toe
Twenty-five with a izz-l, with nowhere to gizzo, I know
Them *****z from the other side recognize my face
Cause it's the o.g. d-o-double-g, l-b-c
Mad doggin *****z 'cause I don't care
Red jumpsuit with two braids in my hair
*****z stare as I enter the center
They send me to a level three yard, that's where I stay
Late night I hear toothbrushes scrapin on the floor
*****z gettin they shanks, just in case the war, pops off
Cause you can't tell what's next
My little homey baby boo he took a pencil in his neck
And he probably won't make it, to see twenty-two
I put that on my momma, I'ma ride for you baby boo
