Title says it all. Im looking for a book or DVD that shows practical BJJ defense to real life situations, such as gun, knife, and other weapons.

For knife or gun defense, I don't know if you want a BJJ video. Helio and Rorion and their line have demonstrated some weapons defense (even Rickson and Royler demo'd it in Pride), but I don't think those are the best weapons defenses. Your best bet is to look into some of the martial arts that deal with weapons fighting i.e. Kali/Escrima.

I don't know if there are any Kali dvds, but if there are, get one. We have a Kali class that deals with this stuff, but I have never bothered going as I am bullet proof.

The best defense is a wallet and good pair of shoes.

Your right on about this...their knife defense is scary....would never use it. Kali is the best bet for knife defense. There are good gun takeaways out there just have to learn them.

There's a review on there that makes me laugh:

This review is from: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Self-Defense Techniques (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu series) (Paperback)
I am a POLICE use of force instructor. I have been a Martial Artist for over 30 years and currently hold 3 Black Belts. Now, I own most of Peligro's books on the Gracie family and their art. In fact, all the books have been personally autographed by Peligro himself. I teach survival against armed individuals (Gun, Knife & Clubs etc), and I have to say that this is the worst of the series of books. Many of the techniques would get you killed if not seriously injured. The people who have rated this book before me saying the same stuff are telling the truth. In fact, I sold my book on ebay saying that the book was very bad, and some Gracie fan still bought it for the cover price. Do not buy this book, Royce knows his stuff in the ring. A place with rules & no weapons. His street techniques will get you killed. Don't buy this book.

That shit is fucking funny.......I picture this guy having a 70's porn mustache and wearing mirrored glasses.

best gun defense is a gun , best knife defense is again a gun

I second this.

I have seen the Gracie self defense against a knife, and I don't find it to be particularly effective. The truth is that it is extremely difficult to defend against a knife empty handed regardless of your skill in the martial arts, but if you are going to maximize your chances, the Gracie ways are not ideal.

I learned Kali from some pretty experienced knife guys, and I have always found Kali to be a good starting point for those types of techniques.

I agree...I show my students the knife defenses I learned from my Kali training. Plus I provide knife training along with the BJJ classes.

I take Kali as well. Look up if Rick Faye ever produced a DVD or wrote a book. Nice guy.

I am actually going to be working some BJJ with weapons this weekend with some guys I know. BJJ can work with weapons but most of the stuff out there is old school judo goshin jitsu or attempted sport techniques against a guy holding a weapon. The guy leading the show this weekend will be a dude by the name of Cecil Burch who has a BB under megaton.

I think I have posted this before but here a video that talks about BJJ in a Weapons based enivroment

Spider, Shrimp, and Gat on Vimeo

That video is really interesting, thank you for posting it.

I think the most important aspect of unarmed vs armed fighting is also one of the most neglected ones: Principles.
Most people teach a shitload of techniques against gun/knife/club/etc AND they don't teach any of the basic principles that apply to that type of combat.
It's like trying to teach locks, throws or chokes to people who haven't even been taught the concepts of weight distribution, positioning, balance, mobility or leverage.

If something will save your life, it's not X or Y set of techniques, but learning the very basics of armed combat like the vulnerability of stationary targets, the weaknesses/strengths of certain weapons, positioning to help protect vital organs, first aid, escape and confrontation tactics, etc.
If you stick to these principles, then you can start working on techniques. If you try techniques without understanding of principles, you will most likely get killed.

I'm also of the opinion that you can't really teach effective knife/gun defense to someone who doesn't know how to handle a knife/gun. Just like you can't teach takedown defense if you've never trained how to do a takedown.

And sadly, i know now books/dvd's that teach this :(
