Title doesn’t match the article imo. He’s saying Trump has put himself in position to lose the race.

The general timeline with Shapiro is he didn’t support or vote Trump in 2016, then began warming up to him with the justice nominations and tax cuts. He was skeptical Trump would govern with conservative policies because he didn’t seem to care much about ideology and change directions a lot during the campaign. I don’t know if he’s flat out said he is voting for Trump this year but there’s definitely been a change since 2016 how he views him. He’s still critical of how Trump handles many situations but they don’t seem to be enough for him to care if the policy measures he wants get accomplished. What’s funny is there was at one point a time where he would chant “decency” when student protestors interrupted his speeches. Now he’s backing a guy who didn’t care to follow debate rules at all, then got covid and called off the second debate unless people risked him giving it to others. I don’t think the reasoning for his switch is entirely hypocritical but he does excuse a lot of Trumps behavior (even when he’s saying it’s wrong) far more than he does with his rivals over frivolous things.
