Felt good today. All 5 reps of 285 were good, no GM'ing. Probably had a 6th in the tank but was happy with 5 solid reps.

300x1x3 (singles)

It was supposed to be a triple today but I had no juice in my legs so I did 3 singles with 60 seconds rest instead. They were all good, clean reps which I figure is better than grinding out an ugly set. It was really late in the day so that's all I had time for.

Hockey (league)
We had a much better game this week and came away with a 6-1 victory. We started the game being more aggressive and after I scored the first goal we never really let up. They had one guy who was pretty good but he hogged the puck and got frustrated as the game went on so he basically negated himself. We controlled most of the play and never let them get into the game.

Their goalie was getting really aggressive as the game went on (one of our guys ran him a couple times) but it seemed to help him and he kept the game from getting out of hand. We could have had 10+ goals but he stood on his head and kept the game from getting too embarrassing. Their "ringer" also got chippy as the game went on and almost got himself kicked out of the game.

I had a good game, coming out with two goals and an assist. I also picked up a laaaame penalty in the third period. One of their guys was wacking at a puck next to our net while our goalie tried to cover it up. I leaned into the guy to push him away from the net and when the whistle went I let up and the guy fell over. The ref actually paused for a couple seconds and then I heard him say "okay yeah I'll give you two for that". lol. It was 4-1 or 5-1 at that point so I think he thought he'd give the other team a chance to get back into the game. It didn't help.

This week we have a rematch against the other team that got bumped down to this division with us. We are both undefeated since the shuffle so this game should determine who gets bumped back up. Better bring my A game!

Done.

I didn't get to the gym yesterday to do mobility work because work was crazy and I also didn't get to play hockey. My wife was out running errands last night and got home around the time I needed to leave. She forgot to get a prescription so I told her to run out and get it, I'd still have time to get to the rink I'd just have to rush and maybe be a few minutes late. Nope, it took a FUCKING HOUR to get the prescription filled so she didn't get home until after the game started. So fuck you Shopper's Drug Mart, you suck.

That said, I didn't even get to bed early because I stayed up to watch Sons of Anarchy so I'm tired today.

Conditioning (LISS)

- C2 rower: 5000m, 22:14.
- Treadmill: 13 minutes

35 minutes total. HR in the 135-140 range. Rowing was feeling good so I decided to do 5000m. I was taking it easy and did only slightly slower than my last 5000m so I think if I'd been pushing myself I could easily have broken 20 minutes. I think the key was 3 things: not playing hockey on Tuesday (fresher legs), getting 8.5 hours of sleep last night, and putting the resistance down to 6 so my upper body didn't fatigue as much. I probably won't do 5000m every week but I think I'll do it at least monthly and try to get it under 20 minutes while keeping my HR in the aerobic zone.

Hockey (league)
Fun game tonight. We were playing the other team that got bumped down to this division so we knew it would be competitive. Apparently neither team wanted to play defense and we ended up losing a wild game 9-7.

We played really well on offense getting a tonne of chances. We obviously buried a fair amount but their goalie actually played pretty well and we could have had more. We weren't very good in our own end and our defense got burned on a lot of goals. On at least three goals our d-men started to skate up ice before we had the puck out of the zone, leaving guys wide open in front of the net. One d-man also got burned a couple times by the same guy who went wide and then made a power move to the middle and scored. It shouldn't be surprising that our defense is weak since we're a low-level team.

Personally I had a great game, ending up with 1 goal and 4 assists. The first two assists were nice passes to this one winger with a great shot. On the goal I carried the puck into the zone, went wide on the d-man and put a shot off the crossbar and in. Not to toot my own horn but it was a pretty sweet shot. The last two assists were a result of putting the puck toward the net and someone banging in a rebound.

Anyway, it was a lot of fun even though we lost. We talked to the convener before the game and he said that since there are a handful of teams that are too good for the bottom division but too many teams to move one division up, he's going to create another division. We'll end up in that division with teams better than the ones we've blown out but not as good as the ones that beat us earlier in the season. Should be fun.

I come here for the beard and beer updates Dr. Please do not disappoint. I will be making a few purchases for my Christmas stash soon.

I should post a picture of my beard, it's getting all scruffy again. I'll probably get a trim and haircut later this week so I look good for the company Xmas party err... I mean "Festive Soiree".

Beer... recently I tried St. Bernardus Christmas Ale

111201-FiresideChat-PeterBeerReview-20.jpg

10% ABV and a 750ml bottle so I shared this with two friends. I don't generally like Winter Ales as I find them too sweet and boozy tasting but this one was different, maybe because it's a Christmas ale. Moderately sweet and the alcohol was there but not overpowering. Pretty malty with hints of figs, raisins etc. and maybe a bit of spice (like cinnamon or nutmeg?).

My one friend really liked it and he tends to like this type of beer. As a general rule I'm not usually impressed by Belgian beers and this was the same. Good but not great, though it gets great reviews online. For a Christmas beer I always go with Black Oak's Nutcracker Porter. It's a malty porter with cinnamon and just a touch of hops. It's possibly my favourite beer all-time. I currently have 5 bottles in my fridge and will be purchasing more now that it's available at the LCBO.

The only other beer I've tried recently is True North. It's a discount beer brewed by Magnotta Winery. I've tried their IPA and Copper Alt-bier and both are decent and a good price ($19/12). The IPA is a bit thin but has a decent hop kick. The Alt-bier is a nice malty ale. Both are easy to drink with no gross aftertaste (like say Molson Canadian) so they are a good choice for a night of drinking (e.g. watching a UFC). They have 4 other kinds but they don't carry them at the beer store near beer.

The LCBO actually brought in a lot of stouts and porters for their Fall release so I need to get on them before they disappear.

Hockey (pick-up)
Good game last night. Pretty fast-paced the entire time and the teams were pretty balanced. I think I had one goal and a handful of assists. The consistent fast pace meant I got a good workout too. Sometimes the game can be up and down but last night was consistently up tempo. Good times.

Hockey (league)
Crazy game yesterday. The team we played is a below-average team with a couple ringers who are douche-bags. The one guy was taunting our team all game and threatening our players. At the end of the game he took a run at one of our guys which triggered a line brawl. I talked to the convener after the game and he said that this guy will be suspended for at least 6 games and will possibly be ejected from the league altogether. A few guys on our team will probably 1 or 2 game suspensions for their part.

The actual game was back and forth, between our team scoring and their ringers scoring. Seriously, the rest of their team barely did anything the entire game. There were a lot of penalties (on both sides) throughout the game so there wasn't much flow. I scored a goal early in the game and had some good chances later. I also drew a couple penalties because their team liked to hook, hold, and slash A LOT. It was pretty ridiculous.

We scored early in the 3rd period to tie the game 7-7 and that's how it stayed. We traded some chances but the goalies made some big saves. As the game went on it kept getting rougher and rougher. Even before the brawl at the end of the game the other team had two players ejected.

Overall the game was just garbage. Their top guy really deserves to be kicked out of the league because his behaviour was unsportsmanlike but more importantly, dangerous.

Hockey (Pick-up)
One of the goalies didn't show up so that made for a crappy game. The goalie switched ends every 10-15 minutes. The team shooting on the empty net had to hit the post/crossbar which is probably harder than scoring on a goalie (at least the goalies that we play with).

I had a good game in terms of passing and getting chances but for some reason I couldn't shoot. I fanned on a lot of shots, I think partially because my stick needed to be re-taped. I think the tape I bought recently from Costco is shit quality (it was cheap so...) because it comes off the blade quickly so I have to re-tape it pretty much every time I play but I didn't last night. Oh well, it was still a good skate.

My grip was the limiting factor on the last rep. Good forearm pump.

I'm getting sick so today I just did 20 minutes of treadmill and then the limber eleven and simple six.
