For me, Genesis (Peter and Phil) is the GOAT band, "Supper's Ready" is the GOAT song, and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is the GOAT album. The whole thing, a prog rock concept album, is amazing, but that track in particular is bonkers. They themselves referred to it as "the evil jam." From Tony Banks: "The best jam we had in the rehearsal room ended up being called The Waiting Room [...] We switched off all the lights and just made noises. And the first time it was really frightening." From Phil: "The Evil Jam started with Steve [Hackett] inventing noises and Tony messing around on a couple of synthesizers – we were just mucking about with some really nasty sounds. We were all getting very intense; Peter was blowing his oboe reeds into the microphone and playing his flute with the echoplex on when suddenly there was this great clap of thunder and it started raining [...] We were all making these weird noises when the thunderstorm started and it began to pour down. And then we all shifted gear and got into this really melodic mood." On the studio album, the track runs for a little over 5 minutes, but when they'd perform the album live, they'd sometimes jam for twice that long. Genesis did a lot of special shit, and with Peter they had some real out there songs with interesting arrangements in the studio and, of course, interesting costumes on stage.
