Bakers Dozen MUSIC Game

13 under-rated musicians (sessions/studio) who have influenced popular music:

1) James Jamerson (RIP) - the bass player / musical director of Motown’s house band, The Funk Brothers. Played on the majority of Motown recordings (Jackson 5, Supremes, Temptations, Four Tops, etc).
2) Willie Mitchell - jazz trumpeter turned record producer for Hi records in the 60's/70's, responsible for the incredible sound of many Al Green, OV Wright, Syl Johnson, Ann Peebles classics, and eventually a massive influence in 90's hip hop, especially with regards to the Wu Tang sound
3. Tommy Tedesco - (LA Session Guitarist worked with many people and also did TV Themes, I know of him because of Richard Harris/MacArthur Park)
4) Carol Kaye - Part of the Wrecking Crew. Believed to have played on over 10,000 recordings including La Bamba, You've Lost That Loving Feeling, These Boots are Made For Walking as well as Zappa's album Freak Out!.
5) Charlie McCoy - Considered to be a staple of Nashville music. Played a variety of instruments including harmonica, guitar, bass, trumpet, etc for artists like Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and others.
6) David Hood - Bass player at Muscle Shoals. Appeared on recordings by Aretha Franklin, Boz Scaggs, Traffic, Paul Simon among others. Currently on tour with the Waterboys, having played on their new album. Also, father of Patterson Hood of the Drive By Truckers.
7) Myka 9 - Best known as singer/rapper from Freestyle Fellowship, but ghostwrote a lot of NWA's pre Straight Outta Compton lyrics, helping them get on track and become one the biggest hip hop acts ever known.
8) Q-Tip - Well known as an emcee but often unrecognized as a producer. Produced most of Tribe's first three albums as well as bangers from Run DMC, Diamond D, Chi ALi, Nas, Craig Mack, Mobb Deep, Busta Rhymes, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey
9) Nicky Hopkins - Piano player who left school at the age of 16 and played with Screaming Lord Sutch. Went on to become a studio musician who played on records by the Kinks, The Who, Jefferson Airplane and The Rolling Stones. He provided the electric piano on the Beatles song Revolution.
10) Questlove - Producer and musician for the mighty Roots crew, has also had a couple jazz bands (Philadelphia Experiment), played percussion on songs for Christina Applegate, White Stripes, Joss Stone & John Mayer. Also produced cuts for Common, Erykah Badu, D'Angelo, Slum Village, Dilated Peoples, Blackalicious, NERD etc
11. Jonathan "Sugarfoot" Moffett - Drummer given the name "Sugarfoot" by Michael Jackson due to his advanced techniques of the foot pedals. Collaborated with Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, Madonna, Elton John, George Michael, Stevie Wonder and many others.

13) James Ramey aka Baby Huey - dude was 400lbs with a big afro singing psychedelic soul, just signed to Curtis Mayfields label when he died of drug related heart attack at 26.
With his band he recorded Hard Times, which became another massively important song with regards to hip hop, being sampled by the likes of Ice Cube, ATCQ & Ghostface. If you don't know his voice, check him out, it is sublime
