Lol, these one hit wonder lists are always so continent specific. Fine Young Cannibals, Gary Numan, Frankie and Bananarama have all had tons of hits in the UK. I think Bananarama held the record for the most successful girl group of all time in the UK charts at one stage.
Yeah that can be said for many bands from the 50s to the present. But if you stand back and look at most of the bands listed, the songs beside them are the songs most people think of when they hear that bands name. Or atleast they have heard the song and dont know the bands name. To the average person who isnt too much into music they only know the big hit that was on the radio or tv...I can name other songs by most of these bands that were great songs as well...
Obviously each country has a huge following of different bands and songs, and it has been that way since forever. But I think the songs listed are the ones they are really known for. Some bands actually were one hit wonders, while others had other hits as well...
But a lot of bands in the 90s were really only known for one song. They dont/didnt have the longevity like bands from the 70s had/have. And most didnt have multiple hits that got aired on the radio...Also there are bands that are huge in certain areas of countries as well. But I think in general these lists are pretty accurate to the average radio listener...
In the 80s many, and I mean a lot, were only huge do the MTV...If it wasnt for MTV most of those bands, one hit wonders or not, would not have went any where...Video killed the radio star...Now today the radio controls what people hear and know. Even if a song totally sucks in reality, if the radio plays it enough it will become a hit and known to all. If a radio station would start playing the B side of every band/song they play, well they could basically create a whole new station, and a whole new list of hits at same time...There are many stations that have played the exact same classic rock (70s) music since the 70s. If they would only skip to the next song, it would be amazing. People would think theres all these new songs they never heard, but truth be those songs have been around forever. They just havent heard them 100s of times to like or know them..
