Bad News! AOL Officially ends Dial-up services

what-the.gif

Surely this is bad news for some, but I didn’t know AOL still existed at all, what to speak of their dial-up.

I remember when I was a kid I thought AOL would dominate forever they were so massive.

Dumbass kid.

I wonder how much one of those 1000 hour trial cd's they used to send out would be worth these days, as a collectors item.
Looking on eBay about $5 including postage.

Now, what am I gonna do with this mountain of unused AOL free trial CD's that I still have left over
Get yourself some strong adhesive, then cut them into various shapes and use them for mosaics. Maybe pimp out your ride by completely covering the exterior painted surfaces with 'em.

AOL still exists? Dial up still exists? What happens to those poor souls with AOL dial up?
They're going back to reading old newspapers and encyclopedias for information. Pluto was still a full fledged planet in those old encyclopedia sets.

I didn't even know they were still a thing.

The AOL merger with Time Warner is still one of the biggest corporate disasters in history

For people who don't know or don't remember, ISPs used to charge by the hour until AOL introduced a flat $19.99 monthly rate in 1997. EVERYONE had AOL, I don't remember anyone having Prodigy or Compuserve.

Crazy that there was a time when AOL when a degree of distinction with your online activities. But only for such a brief moment of time.

Anyone remember downloading a song or video, and seeing something like "34 Hours, 17 Minutes, 56 Seconds remaining."

I miss that modem connection sound.

A/S/L? Pix?
Now I'm getting some memories. It was once a coup to get hold of a 56k modem, rather than the "slow" 14.4k modem.

Modems required minor lifestyle adjustments, e.g., arranging things so that you had "something else to do" for the half hour+ needed for any sizable download to finish. The greatest dread was for a connection to drop when it was already 99% done, because hardly any websites had "resume download" functionality!
