Say goodbye to your 28k modem.

AOL is set to shut down the dial-up internet service that once was the symbol of internet connectivity after over 40 years.
A company webpage titled "Dial-up Internet to be discontinued" states that the service will stopped on Sept. 30.

AOL routinely evaluates its products and services and has decided to discontinue Dial-up Internet. This service will no longer be available in AOL plans. As a result, on September 30, 2025 this service and the associated software, the AOL Dialer software and AOL Shield browser, which are optimized for older operating systems and dial-up internet connections, will be discontinued.

I remember when I was a kid I thought AOL would dominate forever they were so massive.

Dumbass kid.

I wonder how much one of those 1000 hour trial cd's they used to send out would be worth these days, as a collectors item.

It would've been interesting to know how many people still used it. My guess would be like one old person still has an active account set on auto-pay but they never use it.

Say goodbye to your 28k modem.

The memories.

AOL still exists? Dial up still exists? What happens to those poor souls with AOL dial up?

Unfortunately, the people that still use dial up in 2025 are poor people, and they'll lose access to the internet all together.

Indian Reservations are a great example. No one will invest in the infrastructure to upgrade the lines to support broadband speeds, cell phone coverage is poor so they can't tether, and Star Link is too expensive.
Their only option could be the $10 a month dial up service.

I switched from dial up to cable and they lowered the price, then gradually kept emailing about all these incredible benefits and then raised the price again and again. I suppose email hosting costs money so I pay, but don't blow smoke up my ass about benefits.

I think msn emails still are used. No idea on Earthlink email.

I thought that shit died like pre-2008?

Man, I hated dial up. I'm glad that nonsense is over with.

The vast majority of people using dial up aren’t poor, they’re rural. Its almost funny how disconnected many of you are to everything beyond the city. I’m only 10 minutes from town and didn’t have fiber optic available until two years ago. I have a lot of friends whose only high speed option is now sattelite, it wasn’t long ago they had no options.

Doesn't DSL use a POTS line?

When I grew up, most rural roads had a party line that the entire road shared. When cell phones became common that changed, and most people got DSL. Now it sounds like most people use Starlink for even very remote hunting camps etc.

Yes, but its not available everywhere that has old phone lines. I had DSL until a year or two ago, it was my only good option. But it stopped at about my place, much further out was SOL until Starlink came along. I know the common thought is that DSL is available anywhere that has a phone line, but its not even close to being true. I can’t remember the limiting factor.
