The owner of a wild animal training center where a grizzly bear killed a handler says the animal is a "loving, affectionate, friendly, safe bear," but he is at a loss to explain how a "simple routine" turned tragic.

In an emotional phone interview with The Associated Press late Wednesday, Randy Miller said he was overwhelmed with grief at the death of his cousin, Stephan Miller, who was killed Tuesday during the filming of a promotional video at Randy Miller's Predators in Action center.

"It's ... killing me. We were brothers," Randy Miller said, close to tears.

Miller, who witnessed the attack, would not talk in detail about what happened, but said the bear, a 5-year-old male named Rocky, was trained to wrestle with experienced handlers.

"It's a playful behavior brought out on cue," he said.

But when Rocky suddenly bit his cousin in the neck, "it hit him in a very vulnerable spot. If it had hit his arm or something it would have been bad," but wouldn't have cost him his life, Miller said.

"It happened so fast," he said. "We did what we had to do to stop the bear. It took a matter of seconds to get him off, but it was too late."

Handlers used pepper spray to subdue the bear. Paramedics arriving shortly after the initial emergency call were unable to revive Stephan Miller.

A 911 recording documented desperate efforts to save him before paramedics arrived.

"We gotcha; holding on to you, man," a male voice said before it was clear Stephan Miller was no longer breathing.

That bear is Jimbo, Jim and Susan (the owners) had him since he was a cub so they imprinted on him from a young age, this is the key to being around these wild animals safely you have to know them since they were cubs, he sadly died earlier this year from liver cancer. RIP Jimbo. They have a bunch of other bears too.

They lived and worked off a trap line. They weren’t in any town/village but in the wilderness. Guess what shit happens when you live out there. Obviously sad but they were the ones out of place.

What makes you say they were out of place. Lots of people spend time in the wilderness for a lot of different reasons.

They're extremely intelligent and there's many stories of humans raising baby bears, releasing them fully into the wild and still being greeted years later by an otherwise wild bear with a hug. Shit, look at this:

A black bear that killed a 27-year-old Anchorage woman in central Alaska on Monday appears to have hunted down the woman and a colleague while they were conducting environmental surveys for the Pogo Mine.

The bear jumped one of the women from behind before she had any chance react, and then moved on to the woman’s colleague, their employer, himself a wildlife biologist, said Thursday.

An attempt to drive the bear off with pepper spray failed. The efficacy of pepper spray has been questioned in other cases involving predatory black bears.

Dead is 27-year-old Erin Johnson, a lifelong Alaskan who grew up in Anchorage and celebrated her wedding only two weeks ago. Injured was 38-year-old Ellen Trainor of Fairbanks.

Both had spent countless hours in the Alaska wilderness and were well familiar with bears.

They were working in brushy terrain in the Tanana uplands when attacked, said Steve Murphy, the president of Alaska Biological Research said Thursday. ABR is a small, environmental consulting firm that started in Fairbanks before adding an office in Anchorage.

Brad Benter, an Alaska biologist who ironically happened to be at the scene of a separate predatory bear attack only a day before the Pogo incident, said “I’ve sprayed two different black bears at close range, both times with little to no reaction- once in the field on a weather port platform above the bear, with safe retreat, once from a deck of a house, also with safe retreat. I believe it is better than nothing, but I also don’t count on it working.”

This thread reminds me of the Werner Herzog documentary GRIZZLY MAN.
I'm sure some of you have seen it. Powerful film. Especially the point at which Herzog listens to the audio tape of the fatal attack on the Grizzly Man & his girlfriend. The film doesn't allow the viewers to hear what he does but his reaction is strong enough to imply just how horrific it must have been. Chilling.

There's a fake of that audio floating around the internet, the real audio is sealed away and not accessible to the public. Anyway Timothy Treadwell was an idiot and got himself and his gf killed, he got killed by wild bears who didn't know him wtf did he expect to happen?
 
I’d have to find the story but a dude killed a charging bear with a small caliber AK, 5-10 years ago. Think it was a 5.45x39. Seems like he shot it over a dozen times but it was one of the early hits that proved to be the fatal one.

Oh, yeah. Treadwell was out of his fucking mind. That was obvious to me & I know very little about the wilderness & wild animals.
Wow. Someone actually took the time to make a fake of that recording? That's pretty twisted. I doubt if the fake is remotely convincing because no matter how hard actors try they can never recreate the raw sound of actual pants-pissing terror that people make when they're in fear for their lives.
I remember when I was watching GRIZZLY MAN that a part of me wanted to hear the actual recording but then, at the same time I didn't because it's likely something that I'd never be able to get out of my head.
 
I just listened to the fake one over on Youtube & yeah, it's completely phony. It sounds like it was made by a couple of bored teens.
