Its just ignorant and stupid. Just because you can get a good result from some a certain percent of these wild animals will fail to be socialized pets and the results will be deadly for the humans and then for the animal after.

Eh, people like Kevin Richardson, Jim and Susan Kowalczik etc have been working with these massive predators for over 20 years now, spending many hours every day with them and have never been attacked or suffered any serious injury. Kevin has over 30 lions, Jim and Susan have 12 bears. I'd say they know what they're doing, of course there's always the outside chance of one of their animals freaking out and fatally mauling them but that's a risk they're prepared to take in order to pursue their passion in life. These aren't crazy people going out in to the wild thinking wild lions and bears are their friends, all their animals have been raised in close contact with them since they were cubs and have imprinted on them.

I'm well aware of the Cave Bears lol as well as Short Faced Bears. Scientists speculate these monstrosities delayed human migration into North America because they hunted us in the Bering Strait.

Of course many animals, particularly if habituated to humans since birth can be ok pet's. But that does not change the facts. the failure rate (humans being killed) will be much higher in this group then by those raising typical domestic animals. It is similar with the Pitbull debate but obviously to a much lesser extent than with undomesticated animals. Many can be great pets, but the failure rate (humans being killed) will be worse than with other domestic pets. Its a sliding scale and it gets worse and worse.

I live in Canada and have never fired a weapon. I am a guest in their woods (I hike all the time and do wildlife photography). I believe the bears come first not people.

Is there a bear equivalent to the dog whistle? Dogs have different audio spectrum. There is whistle that can scare them off. They could probably make one for bears. There is even one for rats, and mice, and roaches.

I told this story on sherdog before, so I'll just copy and paste it. We didn't have no guns, just fishing equipment and fish bait.

In 1998 I went camping with my dad and his best friend in Barrow Alaska, my dads best friend lives in Anchorage Alaska. We went camping and did a lot of fishing for 5 days, had a great time!.. on the 4th day we decided to do some fishing so we made our journey in the Jeep to the boat, we got out and started walking for about 20 seconds and then ahead on the right we saw a huge Polar Bear, it was enormous. I absoutley sh*t myself, it had clocked us, and was staring and it looked intense and started trotting a fair pace towards us. All 3 of us just turn an ran fast back to the Jeep.

It was very scary, luckily we got back in the Jeep safely in time, it was still a way ahead. But damn that was super scary, it looked like a large adult Polar Bear, probably close to 2,000 Ibs. Very scary.

I was certainly very shook at that time, the look in its eyes, its so hard to explain, but its like a death stare, hard to explain.. but yeah I was very shook, so was my dad and his best friend.

By the way, most regions are completely over hunted and over logged up here. It’s a fucking shame. Even my grandpa who fed 6 children exclusively with elk and deer he shot and veggies from the garden does not want to hunt anymore. Too many morons out shooting that don’t respect the wildlife and are doing it to look ‘tough’. He never shot a bear or cougar or any trophy like that because it was a way of living. He was/is tough as shit not because he has a gun but for other things in his life.

A friend sent me some pictures of a huge bear that was shot after killing two people. I'm not sure of the details but the pictures included the mauled victims which was unbelievably horrid. What a 1500lb animal with claws and teeth can do to a human is truely gruesome. Understandably such pictures would get me booted off this site, must admit I have mixed feelings having them on my phone.
Anyway it's a sober reminder how vulnerable humans are and a person better be paying attention because things can go south really fast in a lot of different ways.
I have a semi auto 12gauge for 3 gun competition that will take seven 3.5" slugs delivering 4,500ft lbs with fast follow up shots in case a person has to walk into a threatening situation.
If hiking in general a pistol is fine because I hate packing extra weight.

.357 is minimal, people have gotten lucky with 9mm because the bear turned even though it wasn't a fatal hit, but why be on the lower end of the spectrum?
I know a old timer guide that recently went up in caliber because of a crazy charge they almost didn't survive even though he had a slug gun and his assistant guide a 375 while guiding a bow hunter. He sufferd ptsd for awhile. He was man enough to admit it after a lifetime hunting and guiding in alaska.
I lost a middle toe two years ago when charged by a sow with cubs, last shot I was on my back with my foot between me and her. Fortunately one brained her or she would have ripped my face off before dying from the first shot to the chest. Was a 10mm but a 454 may have stopped her the first shot. That's what I pack now, it's the same weight with more than twice the punch.
