Joe Russo Explains Why Thanos Is Not Wearing His Armor in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR
If you weren’t able to attend the D23 Expo or Comic-Con International in San Diego, then you didn’t get to see the
Avengers: Infinity War trailer or the statues that showed Thanos in all of his glory. However, posters and images from these events allowed us to glimpse the Mad Titan as he’ll be seen when he starts wreaking havoc with his Infinity Gauntlet — and one thing many fans noticed was that he wasn’t wearing his headpiece or battle armor.
Speaking to IGN,
Infinity War’s co-director, Joe Russo, explained why Thanos is dressed down for the battle ahead.
“He has a more casual approach in this film and it’s very philosophical for him. It’s part of his character definition. It’s a spiritual journey for him to collect the [Infinity] Stones and one with which he does not need armor. Once he starts acquiring the Stones he doesn’t require armor the same way he did when he was a warlord. It’s a very symbolic costume,” he said.
Regarding Thanos’ motivations, Russo added,
“Avengers 3 is in a lot of ways his movie.” Apart from seeing Thanos arrive on Earth without his regal wear, fans at both events were treated to him laying waste to the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy, which is why questions were asked about his lack of battle gear. In the trailer’s final shot, Thanos wields the Gauntlet and brings meteors down on our heroes, illustrating his power. Russo added that
“it gets crazier from there.”
He touched on how big a spectacle Infinity War and its sequel will be:
“It’s a staggering level of scale in the films. Sometimes when I’m working on the third act of this movie, I’m just like ‘How are we gonna pull this off?’…It’s so big! He [Thanos] has universe-altering power if he gets his hands on the Stones. The scale of the things he does has to match the scale of the power of the Stones so I think people are going to be surprised at the scale of the movies,” he said.
