It seems insane, not from the logistical standpoint (actor salaries, effects budgets, marketing etc.) but that they are willing to outlay $1B knowing full well the movie has to probably gross twice that to "break even" according to Hollywood voodoo mathematics.

It's possible, but even worst case scenario Infinity War movies will each have a worldwide gross no less than BvS.
Couple that with dvd, blu ray, streaming, tv rights, etc. etc. and the billion dollar price is justified.
