At 29, who was/is better, Fedor or Jones?

Fedor never needed a ref to step in and save his elbows from Matt Hammil's cranium

Lost the first round to Brett Rogers
Negative. Just because I guy ends up on his back for 20 or so seconds and then a little bit later has his back against the cage clinched with his opponent does not mean he lost the round.

Jones is close, but almost a decade of domination against giants is very hard to match.

Almost half of Fedor's opponents in Pride had no business facing a heavyweight champion. The same has been true since then.

That was a product of the times and you can't really fault Fedor for that. Every established champion in Pride had to endure the sideshow matches. They had no real ranking system and the fighters were sometimes subject to awkward fighting conditions, including tournament formats and oversized competitors. Let's see a UFC fighter today have a training camp for unknown or multiple opponents on a single night. The landscape might be different.

Having said that he did lose the Moldanado fight entirely.

The answer is Jon Jones

- Youngest champion in UFC history

- Took over what was universally the best division in MMA, a division where no champion was able to reign.

- More champions, legends, and future hall of famers than anyone in the GOAT argument.

- Still undefeated (never been KO'd or submitted.)

Fedor rocked Rogers and was the one to take him down in the 1st place before Rogers got on top while Fedor was going for a sub (I think he had either 3 or 4 takedowns in the round)

Rogers punched for 3 seconds from Fedor's guard and then Fedor ended on top and clubbed him with some solid shots. The rest of the round was Fedor's and before that the round was Fedor's

Rogers landed a jab at the beginning of the fight then 2 to 3 nice punches on the ground. Fedor landed a lot more, rocked Rogers a few times, took him down 3 or 4 times, and ended the round with Rogers butt scooting and diving at him with a flying punch.

I don't fault him for it. It just has to be factored into the equation. The fact that jones has consistently faced tougher competition is a relevant fact.

Fedor was slipping for awhile but he definitely lost the Rd. He ended it in convincing fashion. He is a warrior. Jon doesn't stop guys even fighting dinosaurs he can't.

Jones took over a division. Fedor took over the sport.

+ 1

Fedor undersized crushing best hws in pride. Can crushing afterwards. Once pfc ended. Jones crushed a division of dinosaurs past prime eons ago. Beat 2 prime guys. Hot hospitalized by Gus getting a robbery.

The judges gave it to Fedor and they got it right. Watch the round again and explain how Rogers wins it. Rogers clearly loses the round. it really isn't even close

Again:

The one that didn't have to resort to eye pokes to win fights.

Now that counts for something in my book.....Fedor was a much "cleaner" fighter.....and most of his opponents were bigger than he was.....not so with Jones.....who now says he will NOT go to HW (In other words....hell no, I won't face a fighter bigger than I am)!!

Also--his greatest rival would be the LHW GOAT if it weren't for him-- the very same guy, who as a green HW won a tournament that Fedor got smashed in.

In terms of big name wins? Jon Jones of course. Now whether those guys were in top form when he fought them can be questioned. The other thing being that Jon Jones is one of the bigger LHWs, with some of the largest reach in the division, something you can't ignore.

The question is really who was the better fighter at the time. Would a 29 year old Fedor beat a 29 year old Jones? I think he would but others may disagree.

Nowadays I think Jones takes a 40 year old Fedor down and smashes him with elbows. A 29 year old Fedor is a totally different animal though.
