Assited suicide and Pulling the Plug.

There is a definite difference.

Pulling the plug is the removal of a medical intervention leading to death. Assisted suicide is the introduction of a medical intervention leading to death.

Saying the two are the same is like saying that stopping CPR is the same as smothering someone with a pillow.

I am undecided when it comes to medically-assisted suicide btw.

A doctor told me that, regardless of its illegality, many doctors will quicken death in the final, agonizing stages of cancer by giving the patient a lethal dose of morphine.

In any event, it should be legal in some cases, so long as the patient is competent to give his consent.

This is what separates the two situations in the OP for me. A person in a vegetative state can't decide whether or not to have the plug pulled while someone who is terminally ill yet retains their conscious can. I think the former is worse and I support doctor assisted suicide in the case of terminally ill patients. In fact, I support doctor assisted suicide for anyone. Sounds extreme but if the person isn't terminally ill you could require they go through therapy first and it could save more lives.
