Because we now live in a world where words are punished more heavily than actions. It's been slowly but surely drip-fed into our lives and psyche for around 10yrs. I have no criminal record, at all. If I assaulted someone outside my home today, in a fit of rage, I'd likely get a suspended sentence and a small fine and told that my "previous clean history" had saved me prison. I would be 50/50 in terms of losing my job - if I had a 'good excuse' such as mental health worries, I would be spared.
