International Argentina economy to skyrocket, first budget surplus in decades

Helping our friends is a thing though Im not for what Trump said. But if this country is righting itself instead of a black hole then it seems beneficial.

Argentina's inflation has dropped dramatically since 2022, with monthly rates falling from the high single digits to as low as 1.5% by mid-2025, while the annualized rate dropped from over \(200\%\) in 2023 to around \(43.5\%\) by mid-2025. This significant decline is attributed to President Javier Milei's austerity measures, which have focused on drastic cuts to government spending to achieve a fiscal surplus.

"Our friends" is kinda subjective.

Qatar probably count as America's "friends" since they bought Trump a plane...

And sure, inflation is an ongoing battle, but that metric alone isn't indicative of Milei's performance. Look at the Argentine Peso and the plunge into poverty with reduced social safety nets and let me know what you think.

Our friends and Trump's friends are two very different things. That's why USAID was instantly demolished.
At the time it was a temporary pause for evaluation. This isnt a gift. Its a loan that the US should be repaid. It poses some risk if the peso still falls but its the third largest economy in South America. Its important imo.

What? No it wasn't

Bailing the guy out is absolutely a gift.

Agreed that its not the lone metric but in general heading in the right direction. I will look into it as you suggest. Qatar is one of our friends in terms of our guaranteed military support since 1992 (our base there for all mideast operations) and now all of the economic investment.

Qatar's committed investment to the U.S. includes a $500 billion pledge from its sovereign wealth fund, the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA), to be invested over the next decade in sectors like AI, data centers, and healthcare. This is in addition to other commitments, including a $1.2 trillion "economic exchange" announced in May 2025, which includes both U.S. investment in Qatar and Qatari investment in the U.S., as well as significant bilateral agreements like a $96 billion deal for Boeing aircraft.
Key investment figures

$500 billion: The QIA plans to invest this amount over the next 10 years, doubling its annual investment pace to support sectors like artificial intelligence, data centers, and healthcare.

$1.2 trillion: A figure for "economic exchange" announced in May 2025, which includes various deals and investments in both directions.

$243.5 billion: The value of a group of agreements signed in May 2025, which included the $96 billion Boeing aircraft deal for Qatar Airways, energy deals, and technology investments.

$200 billion: Qatar committed more than this amount in U.S. investment in May 2025.

Pause doesnt mean stop forever. It was a response to a temp pause to funnel money where needed. Not forever. This was a 90 day pause originally to evaluate and spend where needed in the example I was responding to.

Sure but how is this helping our farmers that the tariff policy is hurting by funding their direct competition?

As I mentioned, its the 3rd largest economy in south america and they have been doing the right things. Im not for a permanent removal.

I'm for subsidizing Farmers as we have always done. But this is the third largest economy in South America. It failing is not a good thing

That has nothing whatsoever to do with USAID being destroyed. And it was destroyed.
As for Argentina, again it's about how Trump views their leader personally (and like most things, probably involves a grift somewhere).

A leader that has reduced inflation considerably. Cant say about a grift. But I can say that if this loan stabilizes them then its not a bad thing.

There's a lot of good things we could be doing in the world, and propping up this guy seems like at best a rationalization for Trump just being a piece of shit

I dont know if this guy is a good guy but I believe hes having impact. Stabilizing the 3rd largest economy in SA through a loan isnt bad imo.
Milei took office in Dec of 2023.

Argentina's poverty rate is decreasing, particularly since the peak of 52.9% in the first half of 2024. It dropped to 38.1% in the second half of 2024 and fell further to 31.6% in the first half of 2025, reaching a seven-year low. This decline is largely attributed to President Javier Milei's policies that tamed high inflation, though challenges remain.

Sharp decline from the peak: After surging to 52.9% in the first half of 2024 following a currency devaluation and austerity measures, the poverty rate fell to 38.1% in the second half of the year.

Continued decrease in 2025: The rate declined again in the first half of 2025, reaching 31.6%.

Cause of the decrease: The reduction is linked to a significant drop in inflation, which rose to over 200% annually at the end of 2023 but has since fallen to below 2% in mid-2025. This allowed incomes to outpace the cost of living.

Extreme poverty: Extreme poverty has also decreased significantly, falling to 7.4% in the first half of 2025 from 18.2% a year earlier.

Again though, the best you could argue is that Trump -who has never shown any sign of anything remotely resembling human empathy- is doing the right thing for the wrong reason. But that's conceding it is the right thing, which I don't buy is actually the case. And couple that with his administration carrying out essentially the opposite of this policy almost everywhere else, and the picture gets much much clearer. Our entire foreign aid apparatus has been gutted to a skeleton crew. Our own social spending is being deleted under the guise of austerity, millions facing loss of their SNAP benefits, and yet somehow we're expected to buy that propping up this dude with many billions of dollars is somehow appropriate.

Im merely showing you data of significant economic promise and progress which you are ignoring. This was a loan that hopefully helps them help themselves.
