Good point, We're all rich compared to the rest of the world.I have running water, electricity, a roof over my head, food in my fridge....
Honestly think about it, just the mere fact that any of us are typing in this thread makes us wealthy.
I've been to Iraqi, Kuwait, Qatar, Germany, Portugal, Mexico, and Columbia. The disparity in each of those countries compared to the U.S is crazy. In some of these countries, if you have a well, a donkey and a house your fuking rich.
We all have it better then a majority of people in this world.
A quick search yields this:
Let's put the world's average salary - in PPP dollars - of $1,480 a month, or almost $18,000 a year, in context:
You might think that $1,480 a month, or $18,000 a year, is quite high. It comes to $75 a day for a 20-day working month - but it's well known that more than a third of the world's population lives on less than $2 a day.
- It is less than half the average salary of the UK and the United States, where average monthly earnings are just over $3,000 a month, or around $37,000 a year
- It is twice the average salary of Bulgaria, and the same as the average salary in Poland
- The country at the bottom of the average earnings league is Tajikistan, where the average wage is about $2,700 a year - while the country out on top is Luxembourg with average earnings of around $48,000 a year
It's still a reality of life for 13% of people in China; 47.5% in Sub-Saharan Africa; 36% in South Asia; 14% in East Asia and the Pacific; 6.5% in Latin America and the Caribbean. Almost 1.3bn people in total.
200 grand a year ain't wealthy. Shit, a mil a year ain't even wealthy. That's just well off, and kind of rich.
I'm comfy, but pretty fucking far from rich or wealthy.
A million a year is wealthy man. After taxes you are bringing home about 50K a month. 200 grand which is about what I bring home along with my wife is wealthy also by many standards. I could move over the border to Indiana and be borderline rich on that salary. Where I live I'm actually in the bottom half of income.
I define wealth as having generations worth of money. Like if you died, your children's, children's, children's, children would still be set. A real wealthy man, would scoff at a million a year. That's charity money to the wealthy.
I have an uncle. He made his money himself. He is the CFO of a large company, He makes about 600K/year. Come on a family vacation with us and afterwards tell me if he is wealthy or not. I understand what you are saying but wealth doesn't necessarily mean money to pass down. If you make a million dollars a year and you are NOT wealthy. You either need to fire your financial guy or hire one.
That's like me saying go on a vacation with Bill Gates and then tell me how wealthy your uncle is.
Your uncle is well off, and a little rich, but he ain't "wealthy". Not by my definition, at least.
By you're definition John D. Rockefeller and Bill Gates are wealthy. By any standards if you look at your investment portfolio and have over $10 million in it... Guess what? You wealthy
Nah, you just rich.
We can agree to disagree I guess.
We just got into a rich kids argument. LOL.
"My Daddy's wealthy!"
"No, he's rich."
"Wealthy!"
"Rich!"
You have never had to worry about money. Your household income when you were raised was 200 grand or higher, or your parents are millionaires.
You live in San Francisco right?? How can you be comfortable without 6 figures?? I find it hard in Seattle on thati was raised very middle-class. dad made like 50k/year, and my mom was a stay-at-home. there were six people in the household, so we had the basics and that was about it. i never felt deprived of anything. looking back on it, it's interesting how we received government food when i was really young, and i didn't feel bad about it or anything. i guess because others around us were in the same boat lol. i remember going to friends houses and seeing the same government cheese in their fridge haha.
as it stands today, i am very comfortable. i'm not in six-figures, but am somewhat close, have my own place, save plenty of money, but also spend plenty of it lol. i feel lucky to be where i am.

Ok, makes sense. I always hear the horror stories of SF housing.well i moved here in 06', and have rent control on my place. that helps a lot. most young people have roommates, so you can easily make, say 50k/year, rent a room for say 1k/month, and whatever money is left over is yours. that is of course if you don't have big debts in which you're making payments on.
you can't live comfortably in seattle for less than six-figures? i knew seattle was expensive. i didn't think it was that expensive, though.
You're paying for all of people demand government programs and feel entitled. That stuff costs money and you didn't earn that anyway.Ok, makes sense. I always hear the horror stories of SF housing.
Taxes man. I get taxed a lot as an independent contractor. It's insane how much they nickel and dime you here. It's not so bad with what I make, but as a kid, I envisioned a massive improvement in being able to travel and enjoy myself that I'm just not seeing. Sucks when reality isn't even close to what your dreams were lol
