are the gracies religious?

If you're so anti-religious that it bothers you that much then you need to change your priorities. Their beliefs do not effect you, and people much more intelligent and open-minded than you have had very different beliefs about religion.

Gracie's religion depends on each Gracie...It's not a family thing. Rickson is a very spiritual person, but I don't think he believes in Jesus and stuff

No religion: 15.000.000 - 8%
Other religions: 9.300.000 - 5.2%
 
Vitor was probably the closest to being a religious Gracie back in the day, although I'm not sure when he became a Jesus freak. After his sister's kidnapping? So maybe not.

I think I've heard Renzo, Royce, and Royler refer to God, but I don't think they're highly religious.

I'm going to bite tho...while those people might be academically more intelligent than me, they lack an aspect of intelligence that I posses which is rationality

Man if you are going to criticize Christianity, at least know what you are criticizing. Christians thank God for everything in the world. Christians believe that God has a plan for everything, and even stuff that seems bad now is just part of that greater plan.

It's been that way for 2000 years ever since Jesus died. The Easter story (basis for the whole religion) is a clear illustration of this. What seemed really bad on Friday (Jesus is dead; there is no hope) turned out to be a necessary part of the plan for something really good on Sunday (Jesus is back and now we can be forgiven).

I am Christian, but at least I can understand Atheism if it's properly reasoned. Personally I think your best argument against the existence of God is just the Occam's Razor type thing where you say it isn't necessary to complicate things by introducing a God into the equation because you can explain perfectly well without one. I think when you actually get down into it, it's a simpler explanation to have a God in the equation, but I can see why not everyone agrees.

But give up the silly arguments like "Well if God is all powerful and all good, why does famine exist in the world?" That's been taken apart easily for thousands of years. The religious answer is that we as humans can't comprehend God's plan, so what we think is unnecessary evil is just there for a reason we can't understand.

Seemingly bad things actually turning out to be good things due to a silver lining we missed initially happens all the time in the real world. All the religious answer is doing is taking that real world, empirical observation and extending it across a time period much longer than any of our individual times will be on this earth.
 
And to answer your question about the Gracies specifically, I don't believe the most famous ones you are thinking of are very religious. Some of them pretty spiritual, but I have never seen much evidence of them being religious in any kind of formal way.

I seem to remember an interview where Helio criticizes religion too. I'll try to find it.

I feel like they've made references to it here and there. I'd say they're as religious as most people. If you directly ask them, they'd say they believe. They throw out a "thank god" or "we're truly blessed" every now and then, but they aren't regular churchgoers and don't have it hanging over their head you know?

And Balto, god's all powerful. Why can't he make the good stuff happen without all the horrible stuff? He's omnipotent.

That's a pretty common question that most people struggle with. I think it is natural for humans to struggle with it. Of course I do too. But the standard answer is just "it's part of a plan that is too big for us to understand."

In more depth, it kind of gets down to why humans exist in the first place. All good and nothing bad is basically the Garden of Eden. Everything is in plenty, everyone and everything is happy, etc.

But the idea is that humans, specifically because they have free will, can't exist in the Garden of Eden kind of world. They will question things and push boundaries. It is in their nature. So they can't exist in that type of world. Instead we have the world that we live in now.

There's also the idea that it's hard to be truly good when there is no such thing as bad. So we can't appreciate the good things in the world if we can't experience any bad things. Also, if it is impossible for us to be bad, we can't use our free will to be good.

It's a pretty fundamental question to human existence. The answer is pretty simple, but it's not very simple to accept with all the stuff that goes in the world.
 
If there was money in being explicitly religious, I'm sure Gracies would find religion.

Also, who gives a shit.

If you believe there aren't religious people with a much higher level of "rationality" than you then you're either unlearned or in denial. Just chill and realize it's okay for your idols to hold beliefs unlike your own.

Well, very close - Frank Mir is one of my favorite fighters and he's an atheist. Him being an atheist is pretty close to believing in the easter bunny but I am not disappointed at him being an atheist, it makes him no less awesome. I think he's dead wrong, but I'm not disappointed in him. I like Monson too.

You are just intolerant, as are most atheists. Most atheists (on the internet anyway) go beyond not accepting other worldviews, to actually being offended that people have a worldview different from theirs. Hard to find a religion with more intolerance in it than atheism.

Who the hell cares? Talk about judging people. I am not a religious person AT ALL, far from it, but I don't go around and judge others because of what they believe. I follow the gracies because they are good at what they do. Just like I study Galvao, Mendez, Marcello, Ryan, etc. because of their jiu jitsu, not their religious preference. I follow practitioners that have good morals quality and integrity. Get off that horse man.
