Like, actually, clinically retarded?

I'm a conspiracy enthusiast. I love reading in-depth about conspiracy theories, but the more I do, the more I realize how fucking idiotic some of these people are. I'll give a few examples and update the thread with more when I have more time to collect some data on the pure low-IQ madness in these circles.

I've read some insane stuff that people seem to believe (in order from the more common to the most absurd):

  • Sandy Hook was a hoax. Not a false flag, but a straight up hoax. No one died. This theory is "bolstered" by claims that the school wasn't open at the time. No substantial evidence for this theory. Would require thousands upon thousands of cooperative "actors" to pull off.
  • Pulse Nightclub Shooting was a hoax. Not a false flag, but a straight up hoax. No one died. The theory is "bolstered" by the idea that the building didn't have sufficient parking for the number of clubgoers. No substantial evidence for this theory. Would require hundreds of cooperative "actors" to pull off.
  • 9/11 wasn't just an inside job. It was the result of a "direct energy weapon" fired from space. Or perhaps the result of miniature nuclear explosions. This theory is bolstered by the fact that first responders developed cancer. No substantial evidence for this theory. Would require thousands of cooperative "actors" to pull off.
  • 9/11 was a hoax. Not a false flag, but a straight up hoax. No one died. No one was in the buildings. No planes flew into the buildings. The visuals were CGI overlays during planned controlled demolitions. No substantial evidence for this theory. Would require thousands upon thousands of cooperative "actors" to pull off.
  • Flat fucking earth.
I have other things that'll be worth bringing up when I have time to listen to podcasts to pull quotes. Most notably, literally any episode of The Higherside Chats. I'm fairly certain the host purposefully brings the most nutty fucking people on his show to low-key make fun of them.

What's up with Conspiracy Theorists and Satanism? These nutjobs have the unique talent of linking literally any unscrupulous activity with "ritual Satanic sacrifices" and shit. There are plenty of valid lines of inquiry, but throwing some Satan Worshiping into any discussion is a real non-starter.

Mentally deficient.. But usually not retarded.

They are silly but I cant say that I dont kinda believe that our ancestors were the product of alien DNA mixed with primate DNA.

It certainly seems that way.

They tend to flock to the idea of "If you don't believe, you have already been brainwashed and conditioned to not believe"

This is my biggest pet-peeve. I frequent r/conspiracy on Reddit, and whenever I post common sense explanations for things, they call me a "shill" and cling even tighter to their ridiculous ideas.

But not retarded.

Over active imaginations.

They also suffer from some level of delusion which makes them blind to the absurd improbability of their own conspiracy.

Christianity is probably the single most insane conspiracy theory I've ever heard, but a lot of people believe in it while managing to be perfectly intelligent in other areas. I think we just have a natural talent for being conspiracy theorists and an ability to separate our crazy beliefs from our normal ones.

People pushing Sandy Hook should be punched in the fucking face though.

Flat earthers are my favourite.

This crazy old fucker wanted to prove the earth was flat by building his own rocket LOL

Despite not having faith, i dont think its that crazy

I don't want to hijack, it's just an example of lots of people believing something objectively batshit nuts and still being mentally competent. If people don't like that example I'm sure they can find others, like modern alien visitation.

I have no doubt that some people can maintain wild conspiracy theories while also being generally mentally competent. I'm not talking about those people. I'm talking about the ones with such outlandish, wild ideas that I can't imagine them functioning in society.

Fair enough. Pretty much every civilization ever believes in some sort of religion. Even modern tripes with no contact to the outside world.

Its kind of crazy to completely write it off too

Ill go ahead and second this.

Anyone that believes the literal word of their religious book of choice forfeits all rights to make fun of conspiracy theorists.

I think people pick up on some stuff that is legitimately suspect, like a lot of less-insane conspiracies have a lot of truth in their foundation. Once some people delve into this they end up chasing their tail going deeper and deeper. Everything has hidden meaning if you look close enough, etc...

This is one of the ones that really gets me in terms of making me really bust a WTF. I don't think I heard of it as "CGI overlays" but rather holograms, but same difference really.

The thing is, I'm always down for a good conspiracy, and various conspiracies large and small have been proven over the years. But there's a limit, man. There's a fucking limit.

the Sandy Hook thing got muddied by that one father who was smiling and acting strangely before giving his speech to the media

I believe all the allegations of actors stem from that

It's more like how powerful your willpower can be. There are plenty of examples in each of our lives where we continue to ignore or discount reason, logic, and truth in favor of emotion. We speed in our cars because it feels like more control. We eat junk food because it tastes good. We don't always fuck because we want children.

Conspiracy theories make people feel special, like they're on the inside of a secret. Hence, the harder the defense the more special they feel for having stuck to their "truth." This creates a nice feedback loop most people might say was delusional, but if you ask Robert Anton Wilson he's got a nice term: reality tunnel
