IIRC, a lot of Kaczynski's manifesto made a hell of a lot of sense.

But then he had to go blowing people up and shit.

The tech is still helping people. The problem is the monitization of the tech pushed the tech in undesirable directions.

the labeling and categorizing by people these days is nauseating. You bring up great points to someone and you get put into a box

"there's a word for people like you, you're a luddite"

there's a few words for people like this. "stuck up asshole"

At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if the media and the feds wagged the dog so they could lock him up

Most of this is just strawman stuff. Technology always interacts with culture and vice versa. Technology is aways an uncontrolled experiment. There is always a massive debate about the impact of new technologies. "Social media may be bad" is not thought leader stuff. Every single person I know has concerns about it.

When I read the OP I can only imagine how bored the "tech friend" must have been to have to sit through some tirade that a 12 year old would probably find simplistic.

I was recently talking to a friend who works in tech and he often keeps me posted on new developments and things that are to come down the line. I told him that I think we've reached a tipping point in technology. I feel like the ultimate purpose of tech is to make people's lives better. If it doesn't improve day-to-day life then it's not real tech in my estimation. And I told him I feel like we're at that point where the tech we are creating as of the last decade is hurting people more than it's helping them. Stuff like social media makes people less social while causing anxiety and depression in young kids, plus it's a time sink. Dating apps have turned women into whores and men into whore mongers. Wikipedia has made people lazy and has shielded them from learning how to do proper research.. YouTube makes everyone a celebrity and gives equal weight to all no matter how dumb or evil the person is. We are all becoming more insulated, less tolerant, less connected with nature. Technology is making us less human

To me that's not the purpose of tech. The stuff we are creating isn't so much helping people as it allows them to indulge the worst aspects of human nature. My friend says well we can't blame it on tech, we must blame the people. But I say if not for people then the tech would just sit there as useless and dumb as a rock. We can never separate tech from the people who use it.

Then he says there's a word for people like me. It's called a luddite. Someone who fears or resents technological progress.

I disagree with that. I respect tech and it's utility. I just worry that we are at a tipping point where our tech is starting to hurt us more than it helps us.

Anyone also agree?
I do agree in some aspects. If one day we just lost electricity,no one would know how to do anything. It's a scary thought.

Dating apps have turned women into whores and men into whore mongers.
This part sounds a lot like typical reactionary bullshit. Is there any data showing that women are having more one night stands than before? If so, is there any data showing that it is caused by dating apps?
Is there any data showing that men are pursuing one night stands more than they have in the past? And again, if so, is there any data showing a causal relationship between that and dating apps?

There have always been loose women. And men have always wanted to go out and get laid with no strings attached. Tech certainly hasn’t had a detrimental effect on my life. But I don’t have Facebook, Instagram, or any other shit.

In fact, the only way I can see tech having a net negative impact on the world is all the new “news outlets” and pundits who now have access to millions of people and can use the tech to spread misinformation, like pizza gate, Covid misinformation, stories about this or that which were debunked but never retracted or corrected, etc. But even then, the issue is with people being uneducated and not knowing how to properly qualify sources of information or think critically. I guess tech has exacerbated a problem that already existed in that sense.
