Apatow vs McKay 2000's comedies

Pineapple Express and The Other Guys are the two best movies on that list.

McKay's movies were more laugh out loud hilarious and closer to a throw back to movies like Caddyshack or Animal House where the story was just a framework for bits. Apatow movies aren't as laugh out loud funny, but they are better "films" for sure.
I can agree with this to a certain extent. The first Apatow flick I recall seeing is The Forty Year Old Virgin, (after hearing so much acclaim), and when I’d finished it I had two basic thoughts:

1) a lot of fat could have been trimmed

2) it was overall a good movie but not really that funny.

I think Apatow has a couple major flaws as a filmmaker. He makes comedy vehicles for people who arent very funny. Somehow Owen Wilson, Seth Rogan and James Franco became comedy superstars. Ten years prior, the stars were Chris Farley, Norm MacDonald, and Jim Carey. And what’s worse, and it ties back to his lack of editing skills, he takes unfunny comedic actors and just has them improv in front of the camera and cuts nothing!

Dub Tee Eff now we gotta sit through a movie that’s thirty percent Vince Vaughn making noises with his lips.
