Anyone Notice UFC rarely can make stars ?

Because the UFC sucks ass at promoting. Seriously, I remember seeing Strikeforce and elitexc, etc, ads all over television back in the day. They need to start selling their fighters, not their brand. Take hockey for example, the nhl literally shoves Sidney Crosby down everyone's throats, the athletes are what we pay to see!

1. I believe you are wrong about the NHL. The teams are primarily what fans pay to see. It is business as usual for sports teams to promote the team above any individual player. Names come and go, the home does not (er, not as often).

2. I do agree that you do not see a ton of UFC ads, but maybe I do not watch the right channels. I rarely see print ads either, outside of the odd poster or two at a sports bar.

3. I also question your point about the UFC not selling fighters. They have sold Rousey and Tate as hard as possible, even to NHL level shoving them down our throats. I am sure there have been a dozen threads complaining about exactly that.

They famously touted Barao as the P4P greatest in an unfortunately untimely manner. They are certainly pushing the McGregor hype pretty hard as well, and of course a loud minority of Sherdog is up in arms about that as well.

You can complain about the UFC over-hyping fighters, and you can complain about the UFC not hyping fighters enough, but it takes an impressive logical dexterity to complain about both together.

This thread is completely illogical.

Does TS expect everyone to start their MMA in the UFC? Whether you like it or not, the UFC is the biggest MMA promotion in the world. Before a fighter turns pro, he needs to make his name as an amateur. Then he slowly moves up in the ranking in the regional circuit. Not everyone can be LeBron James or Kobe Bryant when becoming an professional athlete. Do you think Fedor, Anderson, and St-Pierre started their MMA career in a major MMA organization?

What a dumb thread.
fedor did doe

i've pretty much killed this whole subject.i've got expertise for miles on how the ufc is clueless as a fight org. Check out my posts on it. They're all pretty salad for starters

And for desert there will be some salty posters

They have three stars.

Jones, Weidman, Rousey.

Jones flopped big time, he failed to take MMA to the next level like we thought he could five years ago but he's the best fighter in the game right now. Weidman will eventually surpass him.

Stars are never made. We occasionally get ideas of fighters shoved down our throats but in reality the people make stars.

Chael was nobody until he started with the schthick that made the audience remember their WWF/NWA/ECW/WCW childhood.

BJ Penn came and just scrapped. He had charisma and at the time he could back it up.

Nobody but Ronda and Conor have that electricity now. That combination of looks, charisma and excitement. People want to see and hear what they will do next inbetween fight time and at fight time.

i used to be on the same page, but lately UFC has been doing alot better.

Other orgs had squash matches and they would pit their best guys with up and comers. B/c they didn't have anyone else for the top guys to fight. You beat a guy like JZ Calvancante or Josh thompson in SF, you had arrived.

UFC used to never do this, so the top 10 would become stagnant with the same guys. But now it seems you get into Bisping or Faber territory, you're going to the back of the long line fighting outside the top 10. That's a recipe for making chicken salad from chicken shit

I always thought the UFC's priority was to promote the brand first. So if the fighters aren't trying to actively market themselves... good luck.

Jones went from living in his grilfriend's house to a multimillionaire. Has it dawned on any of you that he is not interested in playing the UFC's game? He takes his money and keeps it moving. I think he's fine with that. He is not interested in being a lap dog for Dana White. Who could blame him. Some of you have what appears to be a pathological need to hate this guy.

I think McGregor is proof enough that stars have to be found, not made.

Dana White other then maybe Ronda Rousey gets more exposure then anyone and he's not even a fighter or former fighter or coach. Just some bald sleazy loud mouth who happen to have rich friends.

I think McGregor is proof that if you want to be a star, you have to put in the work yourself. Not expect the UFC to do it for you.

Other fighters should take note.

yep.

i think the ufc is focused on furthering it's brand, rather than the brand of it's fighters atm (which seems like bad strategy, but what do i know)

Other orgs let stars emerge based solely on their fights.. Dana wants to pick who he likes or who has the best conversations with him.. Letting people fight and not having this or that guy pushed by an individual like Dana is the better way to make stars.

UFC has made money, so I guess it's wtevr.

That's what most of these idiots don't understand. Dana doesn't like indeoendent people. Notice how during the 'star building' he always has to have his face plastered somewhere near it, like he's doing the fighting. People who don't think he's bad as Don King are blind. If you think for yourself and don't huff his farts he'll throw you under the bus in a heartbeat.

Good point.

Terrible stupid nonsense.

As soon as you lose, you suck. And in MMA there are many ways to lose. Stars are built on the backs of cans, but the UFC for the most part gives us competitive match-ups. (E.g. Tyson went on a 30 something win streak, and went on a second streak after dropping the first, same with Roy Jones Jr)

See Dana's problem? Hence his shameless hype.

Sherdoggers make stars. No one else. Every fighter you listed moved sherdog's needle.
