Anyone know why the great Mark Schultz only had one mma fight?

Such a legendary wrestler, and beat Goodridge handily, seems like he could have gone a long way in mma.

It was more of a bucket list item for him I believe. Also at that point NHB fighting wasn’t an especially lucrative career and he was offered a coaching position with a college team.

MMA still not that lucrative, especially for such a high level athlete

The movie Foxcatcher made it seem like such a fall from grace.

Not to mention he was passed his physical prime.

Du pont did to his life what USADA did to Jon Jones career

I remember reading that he and Rickson Gracie did some training together.

He did it a couple months after his brother was killed. He was in a bad mind state and could probably have used the cash. He was a coach at the time and that was a safer and more lucrative career. He tells a different story everytime though. He obviously has some brain damage and is also a total fucking nutcase. Sad story.

He looked very good in crossing over to mma in that one fight. Thanks for the info

Also he was the wresting coach at BYU and they didn't want him fighting.

The movie was all over the map. Schultz did it for a payday. Wrestlers were getting mad money for MMA at that point. Schultz was an odd weight, right in the middle, lots of competition. Cael Sanderson was in the same boat. They could have been great or they were prey.

Schultz injured his back in the fight IIRC

So I doubt he wanted to carry on fighting in no holds barred matched and risk injuring himself further while he was coaching at BYU...among other reasons I'm sure
