I'm thinking of going to the Toronto international film festival. For obvious reasons.

But how about you guys?

Have you been before or plan to go this year?

Back in my younger and more vulnerable days, I used to go to Spike & Mikes Sick And Twisted Festival Of Animation, it was a traveling one day festival that was big with the college kids and the reefer crowd, it would show all these weird, wild and wacky cartoons back before that stuff became normal with Adult Swim and Comedy Central and the Nickelodeon stuff in the 90's

South Park actually started out there but back then the characters were switched, Cartman was called Kenny and Kenny was called Cartman

I used to go to the LA film festival every year. Got to see Christopher Nolan be interviewed and he's super intelligent and educated on cinema. Got to see Sean Baker interviewed after we watched his shitty film. And he's the complete opposite. He's a smug moron who thinks he's intelligent but was rolling his eyes at the questions the audience was asking in the Q&A.

Also got to see several films that I never would've seen otherwise. None were good. Ultimately it felt like a big money grab. Like you could buy a VIP pass that would get you into an afterparty with the people who made the film. But there were several afterparties and you needed to buy a pass to each one, and you didn't know which filmmaker would be at which party.

It seemed pretty amateur for being in Los Angeles. I can see why it's not as famous as Sundance, Cannes, and Toronto.

Very fascinating insight. So you had access to VIP to these after hour parties? If you have, just curious have you seen big movie stars there? Or just the non celebrity crew that worked in the film?

No I didn't buy the VIP passes. Just reading the descriptions about how they can't guarantee who will be there turned me off. They were pretty expensive too. There were other things than felt like money grabs to that I just don't recall. The whole thing felt like Vegas, where everywhere you turn they're just trying to milk you. That's why I quit going.

Plus it sounds more fun than it is. I mean on my head I was like, "I'm going to get to see so many movies!"

But in reality, how many movies can you watch in a day? 2? Maybe 3? That's as many as you can tolerate, but then you have to consider the showtimes. Typically I'd makea list of everything I wanted to see, but then the conflicting showtimes made me constantly have to choose one over the others.

Also the ones that looked really good sold out quickly so I couldn't see those either.

I wound up seeing 2 movies per day, and usually one of those was not on my list, and I just watched it because it was the only one I could get in to see at that time.

Also, take a friend. I thought I'd meet other film nerds and we'd discuss the movies and shit, but no. Didn't meet anyone.

I used to go to FantAsia in Montreal. It was fun.

I've been to TIFF a ton of times, the films are amazing and I highly recommend it! (But I've recently heard it's become hella expensive.)

The best films I've seen there were Cave Of Forgotten Dreams, JCVD, and Brawl In Cell Block 99. I don't think I've seen any bad films or ever regretted going.

I haven't but I totally would given the opportunity. Do eeet.

Smaller ones, where it is about watching films, and not about famous people/awards.

I used to enjoy. I don't have as much interest in films for the past 10+ years. So I stopped going.

went to see Spike Lee get presented an award, I've seen spike on two other occasions, super humble guy. His movie at that time, was just ok, wasn't a hit, "Passing Strange" and he spoke for awhile after being presented an award and then sat a couple rows behind me. Interesting every time I see him.

Back in the day I bought a ticket to see movie at a theatre and sneaked into 2 more movies with my friends. After seeing 3 movies back to back, I couldn't really remember much about the movies. Feel like film festivals would be the same.

Sometimes sure. I got tickets to Del Toro's Frankenstein @ TIFF.
