Tony Weeks was the only judge to award the win to Valentin who was the only one to get or really attempt any damage.

I agree with him, the scoring criteria agrees with him but 2 judges and commentators could not see it.

Maybe you could give rd2 to Finney as that was when he landed all 4 of his sig strikes. But, how on earth can you win a round without any sig strikes or sub attempts?

Anyone else agree Tony Weeks got it right and the judge/ commentators didn't?

Clearly something is broken.

*Not really a thread designed for shitting on Finney, I couldn't care less about him, but I'm interested in the judging criteria/process that Awarded him the "fight".

I can see the argument, but I don't agree. Valentin, despite getting more significant strikes than Finney, just didn't do much damage at all. Neither fighter did. The (not so) effective grappling of Finney, even though it's weighted lower than damage, is what determined the fight (or lack thereof).

I think valentin should have got 2 and 3 maybe on damage. Finney needs to take 6 months to develop his grappling better.

Tony Weeks got it right

honestly not mad with that because damage on other side was ZERO. gey was visibly damaged. they changed the rules yet judges dana and analysts are still not scoring damage first and also not awarding 10 8s when they should. it you get dropped thats a 10 8 unless the round had the edge to the person who got dropped. stupid fights where two razor close rounds fighter A edges out fighter B and 1 round where fighter B drops fighter A and very clearly wins the round yet fighter A wins instead of drawing. 10-10s and 10-8s should be more liberal. and grappling for the sake of grappling is not winning a fight. you have to advance postition and threaten strikes/subs

What? No.

I'm an amateur MMA judge and I had Valentin winning that fight, but had money on Finney so I'll take it!
As soon as the fight was over I wanted to see how others would react to that lone judge.

We really get to see who the crotch sniffers are if they thought Finney won that fight. The 2nd round is the only round that you could even think about giving to Finney but he still lost that round. I mean it's this a fight or some dry humping league? 1 and 3 has to be for Valentin as he was the only one to land any significant strikes.

Finney had a couple of cuts and bruises. He was bleeding at the end of the fight. Not sure if valentine was. So there's some argument to be made that Valentine caused more damage at least in one round.

But does a half ass elbow to the cheek while trying to (unsuccessfully) defend a takedown qualify as damage?

You cannot agree with Tony Weeks. Finney dominated the fight. Just because one doesn't like the way Finney fought doesn't mean he didn't win.

That said, both fighters should be cut and Weeks should never judge again.

Didn't see the fight but yes, fuck lay n pray.

I had an argument before about this type of scoring hypothetically. People say takedowns count for nothing, but then give whoever backpacks the guy the round. I was thinking about MVP vs Garry where MVP lights him up and gets held for the rest of the 4 minutes. People are split. We're told takedowns count for nothing and an intrinsic reward, but the alternative is judging a fight by a few strikes before the takedown. I really wish guys like MVP beat Garry. I mean it's sort of absurd to ignore 95% of the fight and judge it by only the 5%, but also we've seen the guys like Fitch leave the UFC for doing this.

The primary scoring criteria is Effective Striking/Effective Grappling.

You don't seem to actually understand the scoring criteria TBH.

Finney clearly outgrappled Valentin both of the first two rounds. There was no effective striking to speak of.

29-28 Finney is the correct score. 30-27 Valentin is absurd.

The average viewer should agree with Tony weeks. The announcers keep telling us takedowns don't mean anything if nothing is done with it. We are told damage is the most important criteria. Accordingly, Finney should have lost those rounds. Not that I agree with it

Then you should learn how to score fights properly. You are going to rob people of their victory.
