Anyone been broke before?

I think everyone needs to be poor some time in life to really appreciate money and the time invested.

We have a saying back home about raising kids to be tough: a child should always be a bit cold and a bit hungry. I subscribe to this 1000%.

My parents didn't exactly, but they didn't have to, circumstances made sure that was the case. 90s Balkans were not what you would call the paragon of economic prosperity.

Never broke, but when I compare myself now and 13-14 years ago I was not very smart with money. I had the mentality that I could always make more money and had very little insight in terms of saving for retirement. It wasn't until about 11 years ago how that all changed. Now I'm probably too cheap, which is almost equivalent of feeling broke.

One piece of advice people seem to forget about is getting the right insurance in case something happens.

Thank god I had salary insurance when cancer hit me. I am able to maintain a similar quality of life and keep paying the bills while in treatment. I also took out student debt insurance in case of cancer which was kind of a fluke because I didn't know I was paying into it as I thought I had opted out. The bank makes my student loan payments for me while I'm in treatment.

It's important to save in case you lose your job but when you get a health scare it's a double whammy because of the stress from being sick as well as the inability to provide.

For you TS, I'm not sure exactly what to say since you're in a line of work that depends on the market. Side income is your friend at this point. I saw someone suggest selling drugs which I wouldn't suggest at all. The last thing your boy needs is a daddy who is in jail...
Bro I'm 25 I'll never get cancer I don't even need health insurance

When I was younger, my family ate hot dogs for a few months straight cause we were broke. Parents argued constantly about money.

I've vowed to not let me and my fiance end up down that same path. Recently got a good paying job for the area and started a retirement fund, hoping to have a down payment saved by the end of the year. I could probably do better on the little purchases (gas stations, Starbucks) but as a general rule we don't ever spend anything big.

I quit my job before and only had 15k to last for a long long time until I got another proper job. Worst feeling in the world eating dollar menu shit and being at the gym with gym rat losers at 2pm..

If you can afford health insurance get it. I'm serious

Did you think I was counting on getting cancer at 34?

I lost my job a couple of months ago, so I’m currently working as a real estate agent with no salary. Things are tough, market is down. I’m not even making enough money to pay all of bills. Just like 40%
I’m married and I have a son. I’ve never experienced this before
Yes, I grew up poor. I sold drugs and worked as a prostitute. It made me a stronger person. Other than my weak sphincter muscle I mad out ok..

if you think your broke now, wait till you get divorced and go through the family courts, then you know what being broke is like.

In the recession of 2008 I had it rough. I was young and couldn’t afford my own place making damn near miminum wage.

I could manage my money well because I was a damn cheapskate.

Get another job. Sell water bottles at the corner or panhandle.
Go on public assistance until you get out of this slump if all else fails.

If you get in a real bad spot shoot me a PM and I'll Paypal you a few shekels.

I was broke ass in undergrad. best time of my life. Had jsut enough to cover my nut: rent, smokes, booze.
I even got laid. You gotta love a chick who will fuck a broke ass mofo.

Went out on a date once. Bitch didn't put out but met one on the way back home who said she would do the deed for 100$.

But I had no money left after my date. So I got her to show her clam because I wanted "to see the goods" before I buy.
Went home and masturbated instead.

Poor people always gotta make do with workarounds.

:(

They just want it. Like plants or zombies.

Checking in.

Lost job.
Monthly medical bills that need paying
Expensive car repairs needed
Credit card is essential maxed out so can't lean on that.

I have more than enough to save my ass in investments I could liquidate but I'm trying to ride it out..
You should pay off your 18% interest rate credit cards by selling your investments, i doubt your earning more through your investments than the interest your paying to your bank.

to the TS, even though things are hard they will get better with hard work. Learn from your current situation and save in the future when you have a job.

Yep. I think one time in college I was out of work, and my bank account was down to $9. My father had passed away by then, and my mother wasn't really able to float me anything. I ended up going back to an old employer and digging myself out of that hole.

Amazon is your friend
You would be very suprised how much 10$, a goodwill book shelf and the free Amazon seller app with built in scanner would get you
