I'm not an expert so let me know if I got the story wrong.

Basically it has been reported that there has been some serious security defection in Intel CPU which would make user's password and every other sensitive information extremely vulnerable to hackers. Intel, In attempt to fix this problem, updated a patch, and apparently, this has decreased the performance of CPU tremendously. Some reports even claimed that the performance would decrease by 30%.

What makes the story even worst is that the CEO

this sleazy bastard

Just sold all his shares in Intel except for the amount that would keep him in the seat of CEO. people are speculating that the company might even go bankrupt after this shit storm.

Anyway, the very question I have is ..

That's why I never get any of those patches until they've been out for awhile. I don't trust any of that stuff

What CPU do you have?

I read it affects computers older than just 10 yrs like earlier articles said. It affects 20 yr old computers and iOS, Mac. I read Firefox 57 patches something to do with it, but your old plug-ins might not work anymore. I read Safari will have a patch in a few days.

I read javascript is needed for the bad shit to work. I keep that disabled.

Older than 10 years? How many computers are older than 10 years?

You'd be amazed at how much older hardware is still used. A Commodore Amiga still runs the HVAC cooing system at 19 Grand Rapids, MI schools. It's cheaper to keep replacing old parts than it is to spend a couple million on upgrades.

I'm talking consumer use though. How many people are still using a 10+ year old computer at home?

..........

Not if you're the typical home owner. Initially the fear was that pc's based on some or many Intel cpu models could not be fixed with a software patch. But now Intel says it has a fix for both Spectre/Meltdown exploit variants.
The problem still exists for large datacentres where the performance hit after applying the fix may be too large of an impact.
News is still coming out but at this point, the typical home user is fine.

That's in the Core 2 era, and there's still people out there that use them. A Q6600 and 750ti will still play esports just fine and some modernish AAA titles @1080 30fps if you turn down some settings.
