any grapplers smoke cigarettes?

There is no doubt you can be a smoker who is completely out of shape because they do nothing. OR, you could be a smoker that is in good shape for a smoker. You can do it but IMO, smoking WILL hold you back from your true potential. I was a smoker in H.S. and played soccer. I played H.S. and ball for my club team, even indoor soccer. I had soccer practice daily and sometimes 2-3 times per day. I was in very good shape cardio-wise but I do believe my cardio would have been better had I not smoked.

BMA_Matt smokes...smokes people with his famous Pull guard to armbar combo. True story

I don't smoke, and never have...just to me common sense for an athlete that needs good wind conditioning to not do something that has adverse effects on your wind...that being said nicotine does improve your short term memory.

I smoke and train BJJ. I try not to smoke before I roll out of courtesy to my rolling partners.

I quit smoking when I started training. Sometimes if I get hurt or sick and take some time off I get the urge and go back to smoking and have to quit again. It sucks.

i find no sense in smoking think how much money you woul dhave . i think its like $11 a pack where i live so if you smoke a pack a day on average (some smoke more) thats a good chunk of change .

image thats well over what $320 a month jesus .

$11 per pack!? Where the fuck do you live my friend? Jeez, it's like $6 per pack here in the tri-state and I thought that was ridiculously expensive. Down south they pay like $3.25.

I smoked a pack a day for almost ten years. I quit 9 months, 3 weeks, 6 days, 6 hours, and 50 seconds ago. I have conservatively saved $1440.65 USD. I have not smoked 6065 cigarettes. I will live about 3 weeks and one day longer.

Starting BJJ was the motivation to stay smober. We hit cardio hard in our gym, and my out of shape ass needed all the help I could get.

Congratulations! That's a huge accomplishment that you should be proud of.

I doubt any serious, competition level BB smokes. These guys train 24-7, looking for the smallest edge over their opponent. Smoking reduces your cardio plain and simple.

But if you're an average guy that doesn't compete on a regular basis, content to just rolling at school, then you can probably get away with it.

So you live.... in the future? :) The way things are going in NYC, though, it prob won't be far from $11 before long. Commie pinko statist sunzabi....

Thank God I quit.

On another smoking note, who agrees that the best time for a cigarette is right after training?

I have, like most smokers, had on and off problems quitting. Thankfully, I am off, but i can empathize with the notion of trying to quit several times before actually quitting.

In any event, having always been "in shape" I never found it affected my cardio much. But, I do certainly feel much better about myself having quit.

Regarding "no serious athlete would smoke"...this is not true. Many serious athletes have smoked. It is hard to quit, even if you know it is not good for you.

By example, a few years ago, when I was just quitting smoking, I had taken a training camp with Frank Shamrock. He told me he smoked through most of his career, though he does not now (he does smoke cigars).

didn't sakuraba weigh in smoking a cig one time? i thought i remember seeing a pic or hearing about it

Is that a joke? That's the WORST time for me. The best time for a smoke is right after a meal or after sex.

Yep, I live in Alabama and Marlboro Lights are $3.75 at the gas station down the road from my house. $11 per pack would be some serious incentive for me to quit!!

I thought when I started training a year ago it would help me quit, for sure. If anything I went through a period where I started smoking more. After some time, and doing a few other things right in my life, I got down to half a pack a day. That only lasted so long and I'm back to a pack a day. Like sambosteve said, it's very hard to quit even when you know it's bad for you. It's not like we're all oblivious to the fact that smoking is harmful. That doesn't mean our body is no longer addicted to nicotine.

A pack of high end cigarettes in Canada is close to $11.

i just don't understand that.

that's what inspired me to start this thread. i rolled for about 1hr-1.15hr after class with the same partner. we started slow, then picked it up and pretty much went full speed for about an hour. pretty much got up, said peace to everyone, walk out to the car and my buddy who just rolled with me, lights up a cigarette.

he was still breathing semi-hard from rolling

Smoke a cigar on the weekends....thats about it

Even Michael Jordan had a cigar once in awhile :]

Def know a few guys that smoke the wacky tobaccy and they seem ok on the mat, cigarettes seem a litle more hardcore IMO

Dude, what kind of bullshit sense is that? If you quit smoking, your performance will increase. Source: Your own fucking lungs.
