That's one way to look at it, but if Smith had lost a possible Jones rematch he would've been sent packing out of the UFC and would be looked at as a joke champ. Aljo at least legitimized himself as a champ in the Yan rematch & following fights, something that is very unlikely Smith would've been able to do at LHW. Smith gained a lot of respect from the UFC brass for not taking "the easy way out" and was subsequently rewarded with multiple main events & an analyst gig. So he has definitely been financially rewarded in a certain way for the decision he ultimately made, I don't think he should regret anything.
I considered that Smith would just lose the rematch later, but there's a high chance Jones would've gone on a bender after losing the belt and get suspended for drugs or PEDs again, in fact there's a strong case that that is what happened after the Reyes fight and explains why he was off for 3 years out of his prime. So, Smith just needed to take the win and then wait for Jones to mess his life up again and not have to rematch him.
