They were throwing him a bone because they cancelled his fight with Jamahal Hill to make Glover/Hill.

Also because Jiri’s and Rakic’s injured. They’re punishing Jan/Ankalaev for the “terrible” title fight. Smith is next in ranking after all of those.

Then Smith screwed that up.
 
If there is no penalty, maybe he did on purpose for the press

It's really silly.
Like what's the point of signing up to be a back up fighter if you can't even make the weight? He isn't even getting paid for this now I guess and it's definitely not a great way to get into the UFC's good graces.
It's even more crazy considering he should be nowhere near a title fight at all, the UFC did him a solid here and he threw it back in their face.

To add on, imagine if something did go wrong with Glover/Hill or it might still happen within the next the few hours that would make either unable to compete? They'd be pretty fucked considering Smith barely looks in fighting shape and only one guy would be eligible to win in that title fight at that point.

For sure, given Glover's age he could drop out of the fight at any time and it wouldn't surprise anybody. Smith should've prepared to make weight regardless of if Hill & Glover did.

I thought there was a chance they'd reward Smith for serving as the backup and give him the fight vs Jan Blachowicz next, now I'd say he doesn't deserve it.

Vicente luque missed weight as the back up fighter for ufc 268. Not sure if it had already been mentioned.
 
I imagine he knew the other two were making weight and didn't finish the cut, how much did he miss by?
