Are these temperatures strongly outside the expected temperatures for this time of year?

In either case, I think the more interesting (and concerning) aspect of this year's winter is the drastic reduction in Antarctic sea ice.

I'm not talking about what scientists thought/believed/knew, rather, what articles in newspapers were wondering because we had some brutal cold and snowstorms back then that I went through. People sucked up those articles, were subjected to the foul weather, and started thinking it was for real.

I doubt that. Maybe people you know did that. But I doubt it was a common enough belief among most people.

Lol! I write how the South Pole is cold, which is cool we can even know that , and a bunch of idiots start babbling!

Appreciate the fact we can even know what the weather is down there. Remarkable. 30 years ago this information would be a closely guarded govt secret only a handful of ppl know, now I can look up the weather at the SOUTH POLE. And Russia! At the same time! From my living room. Not even the weather channel talks about the South Pole

Incredible warming in effect
