With winter set in in the southern hemisphere Antarctica is experiencing a bitter cold wave, with temps not expected to climb above -60(!) C, or -76 F. Millions of square miles are expected to drop to -60, and it's entirely possible that temperatures hit -100.

It is difficult to tell, as these temps are literally off the chart. The chart stops at -60 C. But the average is below -60, so the daily lows must be even lower than that. Approaching -100 F and colder.

Some areas are 25 F (18 C) below average deep in the heart of the icefield.

Not a good sign. Extreme weather events are going to become more common.
