Nice. You formed your own mnemonic device. That's what your "trick" is called.
I do that as often as I can. I make notes in my phone about their teeth, eyes, tats-who they look like. Anything that will help me in my job. And this is for all races, but i have more trouble with black people. It’s not racism, it is how my brain perceives their features, which are slightly different than what I am used to.
A perfect example of this is certain Asian cultures that may look similar. Sometimes i can tell a Korean person from a Japanese person, or maybe Thai from Malaysian-but I might struggle. But to someone else, the difference is very obvious.
Another example is identical twins. They look identical! But to their family and close friends, they are easy to tell apart.
