The ongoing epidemic of fake hate crimes are a direct result of this victim status culture and how lucrative it is. Attention, money, free shit. It's a big business now. The real tragedy of them is how it cheapens the validity of actual victims of hate crimes. Not to mention, as we saw with Jussie Smollet, these people faking hate crimes all over the place would not hesitate to point the finger at a white person and allow them to be falsely imprisoned or worse as a result. That is fucking scary.

The reason it's happening so much is because the news runs with it before it's exposed, and then they generally don't mention it again when it's come out as a hoax. If you ONLY pay attention to liberal / progressive media then you'll never hear that just about all of these "hate crimes" have turned out to be hoaxes. Reddit is a perfect example and even in a thread on there titled "Cops claim hate crime was fake" just about 99% of the comments are about how horrible it is for minorities in the US who have to deal with these hate crimes on a daily basis. People KNEW it was fake (it was in the fucking title) but they just pretended it was real and they kept on running away with the nonsense.

This was the worst part about the Jussie situation : the dude went down to the police station to ID some perps KNOWING he had faked the whole thing. This asshole was willing to put people in jail for a crime they didn't commit so he could "up his profile." Scary indeed.

In my workplace, this Muslim woman applied for funding (we run a creative technology/industries project, externally funded). One of our Producers said "be careful here, I used to work with her and she is a nightmare - be prepared for a racism claim because I've never seen someone use the card so much".

She was rejected and like clockwork, submitted an official complaint to the University I work for claiming that one of the other Producers had made 'racially motivated' comments to her in the past. This particular Producer had never even met this woman. She had absolutely zero evidence of this incident but the very fact she complained meant that my colleague had to on enforced leave while it was 'investigated'.

A complete and utter lie with zero repercussions or consequences for the woman.

You are right that perpetrators of these hoaxes are generally not getting their just desserts. And right now, there a lot of people wanting to join the victim clan, and willing to lie to do it.

But Brackis is right in pointing out to you that the nutters on the left do not have a monopoly on this tactic. The nutters on the right are just as bad. A reasonable and balanced person would have no trouble acknowledging this. But so many people do not, because it does not fit their narrative. I wonder if you were on here calling out the nutters on the right when they were on their Birther Rampage.

And the very important larger point you missed is that while the hoax creating nutters are annoying and frustrating, and causing some strain and conflict, in the end they are not important. But we have a nutter in the White House doing the exact same thing right now, and that fact seems to be missed on so many. For Fuck sakes, Trump has repeatedly and publicly accused Barack Obama of treason. An allegation so outrageous that even his own party has put a football field between themselves and those remarks. The bigger issue, at least for myself, isn't necessarily the fact that these things are occurring, but the public response to them. Sure, in cases where we have proof that something is false everyone will back away from it, but in those highly suspect cases you're called a racist for even being skeptical.

Odd as I think you've missed the mark almost entirely and you've proven my point. This particular situation was a fake hate crime and this thread was to discuss that particular crime. Instead of doing this you'll do exactly what you did and talk about the "bigger picture" and then blame Trump. I was thinking about all the fake hate crimes lately and I thought....imagine if Jussie had been a little more slick with it and gotten away with his scam? First off I think his career would have leveled up just as he intended, he would probably be getting a lot more roles in big projects. But can you imagine how annoying he would be RIGHT NOW? He would be all over the media, making everything about him and the "lynching" that he endured.

I said this to my sister and she said that Jussie's biggest problem turned out to be timing. She speculated that if he had done everything the exact same but did it about a week or 2 before George Floyd was killed, who knows if the case would really be solved the way it was. There would be a TON of pressure on the PD to not pursue any leads that might prove it was a hoax and definitely to not arrest him.
